By the time the cookies finish cooling on the kitchen counter, Warren sports chocolate streaks across his cheek, flour dusting his dark hair, and one of the biggest grins I've seen since the boy arrived at our home. His energy remains boundless, practically vibrating with excitement. Perhaps his resilience allows him to bounce back from the Billy situation, or maybe he excels at masking his true emotions. The sugar rush from cookie dough sampling might also explain his animated state.
The afternoon passes with everyone doting on Warren while Sally retreats to handle work responsibilities. When evening arrives, Karl lifts the boy onto his shoulders for a piggyback ride toward the staircase. Warren's grip seems tighter than usual, suggesting his cheerful facade might be concealing deeper feelings about the day's events.
"Let me handle bedtime tonight," I volunteer quickly, knowing Karl or Sally typically claims this duty before I can react.
