Sally's POV
The walk through the forest with Karl feels different today. Yesterday's terror has faded, leaving behind an odd sense of closure. Our footsteps match perfectly on the dirt path while the guards trail behind at a distance. The familiar woodland that once felt threatening now welcomes us back.
I move through my house quickly while Karl waits in the kitchen. My laptop goes into one bag, followed by clothes for Warren and me, some paperwork, and a few of his favorite toys. Standing in my bedroom doorway, I stare at the unmade bed. Something tells me I won't be sleeping here again. It's not safe to bring Warren back to this place.
Twenty minutes later, we're walking out the front door. It feels like ending a chapter of my life, even though it was painfully brief.
By noon, we're back at the cabin, and everything changes the moment we step inside.
