Sallie's POV
The verdict hit, and the Fay family appealed. I wasn't shocked—I'd been expecting it.
The wait for round two dragged on forever. They moved Salome to a different detention center.
When visitation finally opened up, I was first in line. I needed to start with Salome, get inside her head, maybe figure out what dirt the Fay family had on Rowan.
Knowing Salome, she'd think I was just coming to rub it in. I braced myself to get turned away. But it wasn't Salome who shut me down—it was the staff.
"She got into it with her cellmate last night. Beat up pretty bad. They rushed her to the hospital—she's not back yet," the officer told me.
I followed the address they gave me to the hospital. After talking to the doctor, I headed straight to Salome's room.
They had her in a private room, wrist cuffed to the bed rail. Not that she needed restraints anymore. She was completely vegetative.
I walked over and sat down, pulling the blanket up around her.
