Sallie's POV
That was the first time since I came back from St. Chaim Reform Academy that I'd been so direct about my feelings. I was sick of how they kept overestimating their importance and acting like they had all the answers.
Zora looked stunned. She clearly never expected me to speak to her that way. When she met my eyes, which must have seemed foreign to her, panic washed across her face.
It was as if her daughter Sallie, who once clung to her arm calling "Mommy" in that sweet, innocent voice, had vanished completely.
"Sallie..." Zora's voice cracked. She parted her lips, wanting to speak, but her throat seemed constricted, like someone was strangling her.
"Mom, don't get mad at Sallie," Jill chimed in. "You've always been so good to me, so I understand why Sallie might feel uncomfortable. Deep down, I know she doesn't really mean it."
