The silence that followed my accusation stretched like a taut wire, ready to snap.
Then the whispers erupted from every corner of the grand ballroom, guests exchanging glances filled with curiosity and suspicion as they studied Stanley with new eyes.
Stanley's complexion turned crimson with fury. "You're talking complete garbage, Ruby! That necklace is genuine, for crying out loud! I dropped nearly a million dollars on it! What would some backwater girl like you understand about fine jewelry anyway?"
"Exactly right," Kate jumped in, positioning herself beside her husband with daggers shooting from her eyes toward me. "Someone of our caliber doesn't parade around in costume jewelry, you fool. We possess unlimited resources!
You're simply attempting to embarrass Stanley before all these witnesses. I'm ordering security to remove you from this event immediately!"
Her hand gestured toward the security personnel positioned around the room.
