Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FIVE: ENTERING THE RABBIT HOLE

Ren dragged Mr. Piggisim with the still bloody sword chainsaw weapon from the bedroom to the living room. His body was getting a bit worse. Ren opened the door, and armed raincoat-wearing police officers rushed in a structured formation.

One officer leading the group, a nearly seven-foot muscular figure- Xu Longwei, was evidently shocked. Ren had to speak up to clear any creeping suspicion.

"He collapsed. I don't know what happened, but I accidentally let him in, and this was what landed in front of him."

Longwei was focused on a vegetative Mr. Piggisim. He waved his hand forward, and two officers ran to investigate the house, while three more went to take away Mr. Piggisim's weapon and also check on him.

"I am happy that you are safe. I hope you are not harmed. Did Mr. Piggism have an accomplice?" Longwei said, smiling warmly at Ren, who smiled back and just shrugged in response. He didn't want to answer anything that could shoot him in the leg, but he would still have to respond somehow so as not to create suspicion.

"All clear, sir." The two police officers, who went to check around, ran back to Ren's surprise. That was fast; they must have just glanced around for anything suspicious, which made sense for the sake of privacy.

"Okay, safely carry out Mr. Piggisim," Longwei ordered.

After he said that, an old woman in a velvet jumpsuit entered the house. She didn't greet anyone, so she raised her right hand, which had a thick pearl-colored bracelet, as she walked around the house. Longwei frowned at the woman, who entered the bedroom.

The bracelet started blinking, and Ren's heart jumped at that.

Why was it blinking? Why is nobody stopping her? And so many more questions made Ren not like the situation.

The woman shook her head and rushed out of the house. Longwei hissed and signaled for the rest to continue their duty.

"Who is she?" Ren asked, not liking that they didn't do anything to stop the woman.

"Investigator, from the other city. Don't know what they are doing." Longwei said as Mr. Piggisim's pale body was carried out, Ren was wondering what was up with him.

That was all Longwei said as they all left the house.

Ren closed the door, waiting a minute before locking it, so as not to look odd.

It was still raining, and it looked like it would continue even longer, which gave him time to recheck the photos.

He pulled out the second picture of a screaming Mr. Piggisim. There was a gap across the picture with Mr. Piggisim now looking like he was a few moments ago, was being in the house that bad?

The gap widened; it looks like Mr. Piggisim was getting worse and may probably soon die. At least it wasn't in his house; he would die.

These photos were like playing cards, except they had real people in them. Ren didn't like the thought of that; he looked at his colorful photo. It looked like he was some rare character since he was colored, was he? Was he even the protagonist now?

He didn't want to think of that now; what was on his mind was the old investigator woman. He hated being investigated for a strange anomaly, which he didn't fully know.

He just hoped things wouldn't spiral out of control. Who was he kidding? That would surely happen.

Longwei pulled out a thick mobile phone outside his apartment building, raindrops hitting the screen, but he wasn't concerned because it was a quality phone.

He dialled a phone number as he looked at Ren's apartment with a frown. The person he was calling answered.

"Hello, Blue. Have you found anything about this guy?" He asked, standing still as the rain banged against his raincoat.

"Yes, his name is Wao Ren, and he was a mental health counselor for Heaven's Kingdom Prison before quitting due to personal reasons. He graduated from medicine with good grades, and he is legitimate, his background from the look of things, except..." Blue's voice trailed off.

"But what Blue?" Longwei asked.

"There were some repetitive issues laid in his files; they all point to him overstepping his boundaries on some of the prisoners," Blue said. Longwei huffed as now it looked like Ren was not entirely out of the clear.

"On one occasion, he made a prisoner cry and almost take his own life, but nothing that severe occurred again. Still, some prisoners complained." Blue said, and Longwei waited for Blue to continue.

"Usually, these mental health counselor guys do a monthly mental checkup in a danger meter kind of way, it's pretty weird but somehow compelling. If you fail, you will be exiled from working with them until you are back as a safety precaution.

Ren passed every single time, yet he would do dangerous things, such as reported degrading, unsupervised interviews, and even once using unauthorized drugs on patients in exchange for information on their lives. He was obsessed with understanding the prisoners in some generic mental health professor stuff. He isn't giving a serial killer vibe, but isn't innocent either." Blue said.

"Did he quit, or was he asked to leave?" Longwei asked as there was a clear difference between those two things.

"I cross-checked, and it looks like he really did quit. Like I said, personal issues were the reason." Blue said.

"Thank you Blue, take care of yourself," Longwei said and cut the call, his eyes lingering at Ren's apartment building.
