"Oh, honey, you finally made it," Lena said the moment Adrian stepped into the hall.
He already had his smile in place. The polished one. The one that made people believe whatever he wanted them to believe. He wrapped an arm around her waist and leaned in like a devoted husband who had simply been delayed by work.
"Sorry I am late," he said easily to the small group of women gathered around her. "Last minute deal."
Lena laughed, light and effortless. "I told you, he is a total workaholic." She tapped his shoulder fondly, as if amused rather than annoyed.
Adrian studied her face as she continued chatting. No tight jaw. No sharp edge in her voice. No sign of the anger he had expected after ignoring her calls and showing up late. The cheeriness unsettled him more than yelling ever would have.
