Chao Meng realized that making merit was not about paying money to buy heaven or immediately wash away sin; rather, it was a process of relinquishing Greed (Lobha), Hatred (Dosa), and Delusion (Mohana) within oneself. Merit performed with greed, theft, or contempt for others would ultimately become Karma that binds the individual.
Grand-Aunt Phan sat chewing her betel leaves and said to Chao Meng: "Little Meng! Now you have found the truth. You have learned a crucial lesson that those three wealthy benefactors needed a century to learn!"
Chao Meng nodded respectfully. His wager had completely changed his life.
Later, all the villagers, led by the Chief Monk and Chao Meng, collectively decided to repair the old ceremonial hall. The three recovered objects (the splinter of wood, the ring, and the small offering tray) were placed by the Chief Monk into a small stupa next to the hall to serve as a constant reminder to the villagers about the value of sincere devotion.
The villagers made donations according to their individual abilities, without comparison or contempt for one another. The old ceremonial hall, which had once been pitch-black and eerily quiet, was transformed into a beautiful new hall, yet it retained its original structure and name. The sweet fragrance of incense and lotus flowers always pervaded this ceremonial hall.
Since that day, Kouk Phchek village has lived in peace and tranquility. Everyone clearly understood that making merit was not a competition or a display for bragging. Merit is a sacrifice made with a pure heart.
Chao Meng became a guide for the young villagers, helping them understand the Law of Karma and the history of the old ceremonial hall. He became a role model representing the courage to do good deeds. Everyone in Kouk Phchek village believed that the merit they made with sincerity would always protect them, ensuring the village lived in happiness and prosperity forever after.
