Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: The Black-Clad Man

After the six men returned to the SWAT base, they first scouted the area outside the compound. Located near the southern city, most zombies had been lured to the southern gate, leaving only a few stragglers in the streets.

Three men per vehicle, they quietly drove two off-road vehicles out of the SWAT compound. Before leaving, Chen Hao locked the gate behind them—after all, several vehicles loaded with supplies were still inside, and they couldn't risk zombies breaking in!

The two vehicles gradually headed toward the northern streets.

From the watchtower, I was thrilled to have a clear view through the gaps between buildings, watching the two off-road vehicles move.

As they approached the route we needed to take north, dozens of zombies were still shuffling aimlessly in the area.

Beep! Beep! Beep!Suddenly, blaring car horns startled the confused zombies! Though their hearing might be poor, their eyes still worked—two vehicles full of fresh meat! Any zombie would be excited!

As the vehicles turned around while honking, they realized—damn it!A few zombies had emerged from a side alley, blocking their retreat!

"Damn zombies! Trying to sneak up on us? I'll blow your heads off first!" Yan Quan, enraged by the ambush, pulled out his gun and started firing while cursing.

Dodging abandoned cars littering the streets while fending off zombies from behind was no easy task!

Jianan silently focused on head-shooting zombies blocking the path, while Yang Guang picked off pursuers from the rear. Yan Quan, refusing to focus on driving, performed one-handed drifts while shooting zombies with his other hand. Several times, he and the others simultaneously shot the same zombie's head—the poor creature nearly erupted in rage before dying. Is this bullying? One bullet is enough—why turn me into mincemeat?

Jianan and Yang Guang, nearly carsick from the wild driving, begged Yan Quan: "Brother, please! Can you drive steadier? We'll handle the zombies! At this rate, we'll die from motion sickness before the zombies get us!"

Yan Quan reluctantly holstered his gun and focused on driving.

Chen Hao's vehicle was much more coordinated—De Yi drove steadily while Chen Hao and Zhi Qiang efficiently cleared zombies front and back, wasting no bullets. Well-practiced teamwork versus Yan Quan's chaotic trio—amateurs flaunt style, professionals work silently.

The vehicles moved too fast for the directionally-challenged zombies, who soon lost track and wandered aimlessly again.

So the two vehicles circled back, honking and slowing down to guide the zombies—truly full-service delivery!

After several rounds, they gradually lured the remaining zombies from the northern streets toward the southern gate.

But they knew they couldn't charge out the southern gate like Lao Deng—that road was likely packed with zombies now. Charging out would be suicide!

Once the northern streets were clear enough, Yan Quan yelled to De Yi's vehicle: "Wind's tight! Retreat!" Jianan and Yang Guang facepalmed at his gangster movie antics.

The two off-road vehicles ducked into an alley and sped back toward the prison.

Watching from the tower, I signaled Xiao Chao to bulldoze the wall once the zombies were mostly lured south. With help from others, they cleared the debris and opened the gate. Everyone mobilized!

I had Xiao Chao abandon the slow bulldozer and join a faster vehicle. Our convoy, led by Qin Goodluck's Land Rover, raced through the cleared streets toward the northern gate!

We encountered a few stubborn zombies missed by the two diversion teams—perhaps deaf or slow, they'd ignored the honking and gunfire. Now, seeing us, they frenziedly charged.

Qin Goodluck slammed the accelerator, crushing them to pulp. Foul zombie fluid splattered everywhere—thankfully we'd closed the windows! The wipers worked furiously to clear the mess.

Other zombies daring to approach our trucks and buses were instantly flattened. We had no time to stop—the real threat was the southern horde that could return any second!

We were nearing the northern gate! My tension eased slightly!

Suddenly! A man in black appeared ahead, waving his arms to stop our fleeing convoy!

Qin Goodluck, already tense, slammed the brakes. It was clearly a human, not a zombie!

The whole convoy halted nervously, thinking zombies had blocked our path.

I was first startled, then furious! After all the effort and risk to clear this path, one man dared stop us!

Kind-hearted as we were, we couldn't just run him over like those less scrupulous survivors might.

"Whoever you are, if you need help, you're saved! But once we're out of the city, I'm punching you!" Qin Goodluck roared out the window.

Controlling my temper, I gestured for him to board quickly—we couldn't delay!

But he hesitated! "There are survivors in that building! Please save them too! With your numbers, you can do it! Don't abandon them!"

Oh my god! Was he trying to get everyone killed?

I clutched my aching head; Qin Goodluck gripped his jaw—we were in agony!

The convoy grew restless. The southern horde could discover us any moment!

"Get out of the way! If you want to die, don't take us with you!" Qin Goodluck yelled furiously.

I understood his rage—this man was gambling with all our lives, including the children and elders!

"But there's a sick girl who'll die without help! And a child—you have to save the child!" The man in black persisted, correctly guessing we weren't heartless enough to abandon survivors.

But honestly, I briefly wished he'd just disappear! His "rescue mission" threatened our children's safety!

Wait—did he say a child? My maternal instincts surged. A child!

"Goodluck, did you hear that?"

"I heard. There's a child—we can't leave them. Duo Jie, you lead the convoy out. I'll go with him." As a father himself, Qin Goodluck couldn't abandon a child to the zombies.

"Take some men with you!" I urged.

Qin Goodluck took the black-clad man and two other vehicles to rescue the survivors.

I led the main convoy toward the nearby northern gate at full speed!
