Chapter 24 - 24. Her games

The day had been long. The sun had barely begun its descent, casting long shadows across the camp, when Lexi finally returned from her task. She moved with the same calm grace that had earned her the respect—and the caution—of those around her.

The other survivors were still scattered about, preparing for the evening curfew, but her eyes immediately caught Lisa stepping out of an officer's room.

‎Lisa's uniform was disheveled, her hair partially undone, lips swollen and reddened. She did not try to hide herself. The sight made Lexi's lips curl into a faint, knowing smile. She understood immediately what had happened. Lisa had always been ambitious, willing to bend any rules, play any game, to climb higher in the camp's hierarchy.

But Lexi's mind saw the truth behind the display: Lisa was merely a pawn, used by men like Ezra or the officers to satisfy their greed, their selfish desires. And like all pawns, she would soon be discarded when she was no longer useful.

‎Lisa froze when she noticed Lexi watching her, her face flushing with a mix of shame and anger. Lexi's smile deepened—not cruel, not mocking, but calculating.

She allowed herself a moment of amusement, then turned her back on Lisa, walking past her as if she didn't exist. Every step was deliberate, every sway of her posture exuding the quiet confidence she had honed over the past weeks.

‎Lisa's eyes burned with hatred. Every nerve in her body screamed in frustration. Here was Lexi, the same girl they had underestimated, now seemingly untouchable, untethered by fear, climbing higher not through submission or favors, but through skill, intelligence, and sheer cunning.

Lisa's mind whirled with thoughts of revenge, of manipulation, of ways to bring Lexi down. She swore to herself that she would do whatever it took, no matter how far she had to bend—or break—to reach the top.

‎Lexi didn't look back. She slipped into her room, closing the door quietly behind her. Her mind, however, was already elsewhere. She had delayed returning to the underground lid she had seen days ago. Patience had always been one of her weapons, and she knew the perfect moment would come.

Tonight, though, she allowed herself a different kind of preparation—a psychological one. She would need her mind sharp, her focus unbreakable, and her understanding of human weakness keen, especially when dealing with people like Nathan.

‎Later, after the evening debrief, she was summoned to Nathan's office. The walk there was familiar now, the same quiet hallways that twisted through the facility, leading to a room that seemed to hold more than mere authority.

The polished floor reflected her silhouette as she entered, and Nathan was already waiting, standing by his desk with his usual composure, yet with an intensity that seemed to ripple through the air.

‎"Sit," he said simply, gesturing to a chair opposite his. His eyes lingered on her longer than necessary, not with suspicion, but with something more complex, more dangerous. Desire. Intrigue. The unspoken tension between them charged the air.

‎Lexi remained standing, letting the silence stretch. She did not rush to sit; she did not break the gaze. Nathan's lips pressed into a thin line, his jaw tightening imperceptibly.

‎"Reports states that you performed well today as usual," he began, his voice controlled but low, almost intimate. "Better than expected."

‎Lexi's expression remained neutral, yet the faintest smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. "I do what is necessary," she replied smoothly, her tone calm, almost disarming. She wanted him to feel the pull of curiosity, the subtle sting of desire and caution mingling in one glance.

‎Nathan walked around the desk, his steps deliberate, his presence a magnetic force. "You are aware, that missions like these are dangerous," he said, leaning slightly closer, lowering his voice so that the words brushed against her like a whispered threat and a promise at the same time. "Most would panic. Most would beg for safety."

‎Lexi tilted her head slightly, maintaining her calm. "Begging accomplishes nothing," she said softly, eyes locking with his. "I've survived long enough to know when fear is useful… and when it isn't."

‎Nathan's chest rose slightly as he drew a controlled breath, his pride and desire flaring in equal measure. Here was a woman who was untouchable—not through fear, not through obedience, but through mastery over her own mind and body. And yet, she teased him with that very mastery, challenging him without words, without actions that could be overtly defiant.

‎He circled her slowly, studying her, analyzing every detail. He murmured, almost a growl. "Most people with your skills would bend, would submit, would play the game."

‎Lexi's smirk widened imperceptibly. "I play my own game," she said. "I do not bend to those who would use me."

‎Nathan stopped behind her chair, close enough that she could feel his presence, yet far enough to leave the tension unbearable. "You think you are untouchable," he said, voice low and measured, "but there are forces in this facility you cannot even imagine. Do you?"

‎Lexi allowed herself a slight shrug, pretending innocence. "Maybe," she said, her tone casual, almost teasing. His eyes darkened, and she could sense the battle within him—desire, frustration, intrigue, and a flicker of admiration.

‎He had underestimated her, and that mistake now twisted into something far more dangerous: he wanted to possess her, to control her, to make her yield—but he also feared that she could never be fully contained and what— he might have to do.

‎"Tomorrow," he said finally, stepping back and straightening his posture, "you will go with a team for a special extraction. Medicines from a quarantined sector. High risk, high reward. And I will be watching."

‎Lexi's mind raced, but her face betrayed nothing. "Understood," she replied. She bowed her head slightly, acknowledging his command, but inside, plans churned and calculations shifted.

‎This was an opportunity—not just for survival, but to uncover the truths Nathan sought to hide, to test his weaknesses, and to play the dangerous game she had mastered.

‎As she left his office, her steps measured, she never glanced back once. Nathan's gaze followed her, lingering longer than necessary, his desire and intent clear. Lexi smirked subtly, inwardly thrilled.

‎The game was not only hers to play—it was hers to manipulate. And in every move she made, she planted seeds of doubt, temptation, and chaos.

‎Outside, the camp was quiet under the fading light. Kelvin was still restless, plotting his next move against her, fueled by envy and ambition. Lisa lingered, nursing her humiliation and planning her climb, blind to the greater forces at play. And Lexi… Lexi moved with perfect control, her mind a storm of strategies, her body ready for whatever came next.

‎Tonight, the shadows would conceal her movements. Tonight, the truth of the underground lid would edge closer to revelation. And tonight, she would continue to tease, to provoke, and to assert her dominance over every pawn foolish enough to underestimate her—including Nathan.
