My first battle was against a disease—a peculiar path, I suppose. Am I a unique personality type?
Time flies; six years have passed since then. I'm about to turn twelve, which would be the sixth grade in Japan. Since I have no trouble keeping up with my studies, I've had plenty of time for training. World history is fascinating. It basically follows the same arc of civilization development as my previous life, but there's a mysterious gap in the records. Civilization just suddenly appears, already quite advanced. There are no descriptions of ape-men or early hominids.
Where did humanity even come from?
Just kidding. I already know. It's the Dark Continent, which was briefly mentioned in volume 32. It's almost certainly where they came from.
...Fine. That's irrelevant right now. For now, let's quickly review my progress.
The Perfect Convert Chronicles
My [Perfect Convert] ability has activated sporadically over the years, but there were two instances that were truly terrifying:
Tetanus
Rabies
The rabies incident was especially brutal.
The Tetanus infection happened when I was still in the lower grades. I was playing in the sandbox on our property when I stepped on an old nail. I didn't notice and punctured my hand, drawing blood—a rare sight. I had lowered my Nen guard to focus on improving my stamina, so it got through.
I washed it and bandaged it, thinking nothing of it, but about a month later, I started having trouble opening my mouth and was spilling food. Even though I was small, my neck and shoulders began to feel stiff, and the malaise escalated into spasms in my limbs. Honestly, I use Nen daily, so I didn't think a simple puncture could break through. [Perfect Convert] automatically activated immediately, but it was deadlocked against the bacteria. This was highly unusual. I quickly realized the symptoms matched tetanus—I remembered it from the terrifying film Tears of the Tongue. Wasn't this the one with the high mortality rate? I instantly retreated to my room and began meditating. But the convulsions wouldn't stop. My parents finally noticed something was seriously wrong and rushed me to the familiar St. Bernard Hospital.
The doctor's diagnosis was, predictably, Tetanus. They had no treatment and told my parents to prepare for the worst. My parents were stunned and pleaded with the doctor, but there was nothing they could do. I was restrained to suppress the convulsions and given morphine to stay still. Frankly, I didn't need the rest.
I started meditating again. The automatic activation of [Perfect Convert] wasn't enough to win. I had to manually support it. Specifically, I poured in an insane amount of aura to suppress the infection. It consumed a massive quantity of aura and took a surprisingly long time. A normal cold takes under five minutes, but this took five or six hours. I probably also had to digest the morphine. By the time I finally burned out the bacteria, I had used 80% of my aura and was physically and mentally exhausted. I fell asleep.
The next morning, the doctor and my parents came in to check on me and were astonished to see me perfectly fine. The doctor declared it a miracle and performed intensive tests, only to remain bewildered when he found nothing wrong. I went home cured. My mother scolded me, saying, "You are always giving me heart attacks." Sorry, Mom... She's usually a tough-as-nails mom, and I prefer not to see her cry.
The result of the victory was that I am now permanently immune to Tetanus, and my nervous system was enhanced. While it's specifically a neurotoxin resistance, I feel like the neural transmission speed in my upper body and limbs has also improved. This is the great thing about this ability. It's like being a Saiyan.
The Second Battle: Rabies
Next was Rabies. This happened when I was around four years ago. I was running laps around the garden perimeter. I saw a stray dog ahead, looking sluggish. I tried to run around it, but it suddenly sprang up and bit my leg. I instinctively tried to raise my Nen guard, but I was too slow. I'm still nowhere near instant activation. It bit down, drooling and bearing its teeth, which enraged me. While its jaws were locked, I slammed it against a nearby utility pole. I think it died. I returned home, washed the wound, and saw clear teeth marks and blood welling up. Ugh. I dismissed the injury, but sure enough, two months later, the symptoms began.
The bite area swelled up, accompanied by strange pain, fever, fatigue, nausea, and even hallucinations. Of course, [Perfect Convert] had activated, but again, this felt like the start of a long war. [Perfect Convert] only activates after the symptoms manifest, after all... Back to the familiar hospital. The doctor told my parents that this time it was truly hopeless. My parents wept.
They were right to. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear. This body is seriously prone to death flags. But I wouldn't lose. I had been training for this moment. Meditation and manual support! This is a virus, so it requires even more precise manipulation. I must become the cells themselves! (That was the hallucination talking.)
After an intense battle lasting a full day and night, the virus was eliminated. I used up about 95% of my aura. It didn't quite kill me, but it was genuinely agonizing. As expected, the doctor completely lost his composure this time and begged to study me as a donor, but my father called in his men and shut him down. That's what power is for.
As for the victory bonus: since the virus affected the brain, my cognitive function improved. Specifically, my calculation speed increased, as did my memory, by about 20%. It also led to further mental stabilization, likely to prevent panic during emergencies. This is a special bonus, in addition to the usual physical ability upgrade.
The Don's Prodigal Son
Despite all this, I'm still the "boss" at school. As I get older, I've become the unspoken representative, eventually reaching the status of a local Grizzly Bear. I never sought this, and the teachers never challenge me. They should be working! Still, I don't cause trouble; I attend class seriously, and I stay away from cigarettes and drugs. Actually, I did use them once, but for research purposes only—for [Perfect Convert]. Just once.
I prefer a quiet environment, so I crush any bullying and beat down any fights in my vicinity. I hate violence, but moderation is a vital concept. Thanks to this, my immediate surroundings are tranquil. I'm a model student.
Once, some rowdy kids from another school showed up, but they were being loud during class, so I went out alone and silenced all of them with a blast of Ren-enhanced intimidation. By this age, I was capable of that kind of feat. Though almost all of them passed out.
As a result, I now have self-proclaimed underlings from not only my school but also neighboring areas, forming a huge little-kid Family. This made my father quite happy. Since this role is now unavoidable, I've decided to change my goal: I'll work hard to reach a level where my abilities are too valuable to be wasted on the Mafia.
The Breakthrough and Hatsu Reveal
On the training front, my strength training is now formidable. I can manage four digits for various lifts and am starting to feel less fatigue. I need to figure out how to continue increasing the difficulty. Running is also progressing; I can now complete a full marathon in about two hours. I feel like I'm closing in on the limits of human potential. The secondary effects of [Perfect Convert] are clearly significant, making my physical specs the best they can be.
As for my Nen training, I had a major breakthrough. I can finally control my aura. The reason I couldn't before was the sheer volume of my aura, which keeps increasing. This led to a hypothesis about why I have so much: cellular manipulation.
I hypothesize that typical Nen users extract aura from specific meridian points called pores, which are easy to open. In contrast, because of my cellular manipulation, I can operate on and create pores from every single cell, allowing me to draw out a much higher volume than normal. This means the more my body and cells are reinforced, the more my life energy multiplies exponentially.
That said, even I can't control every cell yet—I'm only at about 50%. I'm excited to see how much aura I can generate when I control every single cell. The method to increase it is simply meditation combined with cellular comprehension and manipulation. I was right all along.
I believe my Manipulator abilities consume a lot of resources for this cellular control, which is why aura manipulation was initially difficult. However, realizing this hypothesis instantly made Nen control much easier.
Currently, I estimate I can maintain Gyo normally for ten hours. Due to control issues, I can realistically maintain a high-level Ken for about six hours. Based on the calculation that 1 aura equals one second of consumption in a non-combat state, and estimating a 6 to 10 times multiplier for consumption, my total potential aura is around 100,000. My surface-level Ren is only about 3,000. Pathetic. There's plenty of room for improvement... Still, I could probably last two hours in an all-out fight! Not that I ever will. There are no other Nen users around.
Now that I understand the nature of my "unruly horse," I'm finally getting a handle on control. As I mentioned, my aura is colorless and transparent, making it close to a natural In. It's not invisible, just unnoticeable. Only the most subtle deviations are perceived by normal people.
After six years of dedicated training, my Type-based training has also taken shape. I've actually cleared all the levels. Transmutation and Conjuration were extremely difficult, though.
This means I can now do quite a lot with my aura. For example, reinforcing paper with Nen and throwing it makes it like a throwing knife, and I can perform basic versions of Dragon Ball style ki blasts. Transmutation (changing aura's properties) was hard but sped up considerably for the reasons above, and I've reached Level 5. Conjuration... let's just say I've achieved the minimum. And Manipulation: I can play Naruto with inorganic matter. It's not universal since I'm not creating something from nothing. Frankly, being able to play Dragon Ball and Naruto is a dream come true.
Seriously, this kind of system-based training is essential. It's definitely better to determine your ability after doing this type of type-based training; it drastically increases the quality of the Hatsu.
And finally, the ability has manifested.
[Daily Health Restoration] (Manipulator-Type)
Ability: In the event of an unforeseen injury or condition, I use my aura to manipulate and restore my cells at the cellular level, bringing my body back to a healthy state.
Restrictions:
The amount of aura consumed increases according to the severity of the injury.
It is a restoration ability, so it cannot grant superhuman regeneration.
I will never use any Manipulator ability to manipulate any other living creature.
As you can see, I greatly reduced the Restrictions and Vows. I can manage without them, and I can always add more later. Naturally, the restoration power is less than I originally hoped for, but I plan to increase that through further training. I won't be able to regenerate like Piccolo, but I should be able to stitch myself back together.
The foundation is finally solid. Now, it's time to focus on refinement. I'm one step closer to becoming The Man Who Cannot Die.
The reveal of Kalm's cellular manipulation is a fantastic twist! It explains his paradoxical nature—a Manipulator who struggles with external control but has an unprecedented internal capacity for aura generation. He's more like a bio-engineer using his own body as the ultimate magic beast.
Now that he has his first Hatsu finalized, what comes next? Will he develop the second ability he mentioned, or will his Family life lead him into unexpected trouble?
