Chapter 216: Arrival at Mt. Dreadmist
Grandma Liu's sudden decision to leave Mt. Dreadmist came as quite a surprise to Kenji.
Her reappearance in the world would likely frighten quite a few people. After all, strictly speaking, Grandma Liu was a figure from two centuries ago.
But that was a concern for the future. After some casual small talk, Kenji steered the conversation toward the Serpent Pattern Secret Technique that Arbok had been learning.
The moment the topic came up, Grandma Liu perked up visibly. She straightened her hunched back slightly and, wasting no words, led Kenji back out of the courtyard.
In the clearing, Arbok was coiled up with its head held high, looking incredibly proud. It seemed eager to show off the results of its training to Kenji.
"Kenji, do you have any Fire-type Pokémon?" Grandma Liu turned and asked.
Kenji nodded and threw Ninetales's Poké Ball.
"Come on out, Ninetales."
Red light flashed, and Ninetales appeared in the clearing.
"Have your Ninetales attack Arbok with a Fire-type move."
"Ninetales! Flamethrower!!"
"Yoo-mo!! —"
Upon command, Ninetales opened its mouth and unleashed a pillar of fire straight at Arbok.
Facing the incoming inferno, Arbok showed absolutely no intention of dodging. It held its ground, meeting the flames head-on with its chest puffed out.
FWOOSH!!! —
The fire column completely engulfed Arbok's body.
Kenji and Grandma Liu watched as the flames swallowed the cobra. Grandma Liu wore a knowing smile, while Kenji watched with intense curiosity.
When the fire dissipated, Arbok reappeared, completely unharmed.
There wasn't a hint of pain on its face. It seemed the fire hadn't caused any damage at all. In fact, its black scales seemed to shine even brighter than before.
Kenji instinctively looked at the pattern on Arbok's chest.
Sure enough, the markings had changed drastically.
"This is the Fire-Immunity Pattern. It grants immunity to Fire-type attacks from any Pokémon whose level is lower than Arbok's. Even if the opponent's level is higher, the damage from Fire moves is drastically reduced," Grandma Liu explained.
Ninetales was Level 61. Arbok was Level 63.
This meant that none of Ninetales's Fire moves could deal any damage to Arbok!!
Kenji was secretly shocked. The abilities awakened by this Secret Technique were even more exaggerated than he had imagined!
Moreover, Arbok was now part Dragon-type, which inherently resisted Fire.
Combined with this Fire-Immunity Pattern, even a higher-level opponent would likely deal negligible damage with Fire moves.
"Do you have a Water-type Pokémon? Let it out too," Grandma Liu continued.
Don't tell me...
Kenji released Gyarados from her ball.
"Gyarados!! Aqua Tail!!!"
"ROAAAARRR!!! —"
Gyarados roared, her massive body surging forward to loom over Arbok. She swung her tail down, aiming right for Arbok's forehead.
Arbok finally moved, raising its body slightly to dodge the headshot.
THUD!!! —
The tail struck its body, and Arbok was sent flying.
It flew back four or five meters before stopping.
Looking closely, although the hit sent it flying, neither Arbok's Disguise nor its Multiscale ability had triggered.
Clearly, this Aqua Tail hadn't dealt any damage either.
"This is the Water-Avoidance Pattern. Like the Fire one, Water-type moves from any Pokémon lower level than Arbok deal zero damage."
Invulnerable to Water and Fire!!
Just two patterns granted Arbok immunity to two entire elemental types.
Kenji was ecstatic.
But that wasn't all.
Besides the Fire-Immunity and Water-Avoidance patterns, Arbok had also mastered seven other patterns: Attack Pattern, Defense Pattern, Speed Pattern, Poison-Immunity Pattern, Toxic Pattern, Self-Healing Pattern, and Dragon Might Pattern.
Counting the first two, that made a total of nine distinct patterns!!
Furthermore, the effects of each pattern on Kenji's Arbok seemed far more potent than on ordinary Arboks.
According to Grandma Liu's speculation, nine patterns weren't even Arbok's limit!! It might be able to master even more!
Honestly, just the patterns Arbok had already mastered provided a terrifying boost in power. Their value far exceeded the two S-Rank Pokémon Kenji had promised Tyson Tang.
Based on the Water and Fire patterns, Kenji began to speculate about future possibilities.
Both Water and Fire were types that Dragons naturally resisted.
Perhaps Arbok's gained Dragon typing allowed it to master these specific immunities.
Following this logic, since Dragon also resists Electric and Grass, Kenji wondered if future patterns would be related to those types as well.
