Chapter 137 - Chapter 137: The Summit Gym

Chapter 137: The Summit Gym

Since the outcome of the competition was already decided, the next step was to simply enjoy the process of winning the championship.

Kenji had enough confidence that even without using Beedrill, he could easily win the National Collegiate League.

Time was tight, and the tasks were heavy. After a simple packing session, Kenji set off for Crestview City the next day.

This time, Kenji picked up his pace slightly. In just a day and a half, he successfully arrived in Crestview City.

Crestview City was known as the City of a Thousand Springs because there were over a thousand natural springs within the city limits.

Of course, Kenji wasn't here to admire the water or listen to the springs. He had already booked his Gym challenge before arriving in Crestview.

Early the next morning, he headed to the Summit Gym.

The Summit Gym Leader was named Brockton. Despite being located in the City of a Thousand Springs, Brockton specialized in Rock-type Pokémon, which were extremely weak to water.

Kenji had heard about Brockton before. His scandalous news flew everywhere; he was a notorious playboy, and his reputation was rather poor.

Arriving at the Summit Gym, Kenji found that it looked less like a gym and more like a museum.

As soon as he walked in, he saw numerous fossils displayed in glass cases in the lobby.

Besides that, there were 1:1 skeletal replicas of Fossil Pokémon.

He could identify Archeops, Aerodactyl, Tyrantrum, and more.

It was understandable. Since Fossil Pokémon were revived from fossils, they generally carried the Rock type.

And among Rock-type Pokémon, Fossil Pokémon included quite a few powerful species.

Therefore, any trainer specializing in Rock-types inevitably had to deal with fossils, and Brockton was no exception.

Perhaps because there were many visitors coming to see the fossils, no staff member approached Kenji initially. It wasn't until Kenji proactively approached one and explained his purpose that a staff member led him to the back of the lobby.

Following the familiar procedure, after completing the first round of battles, Kenji arrived at the waiting area to await the Gym Leader challenge.

Three minutes after Kenji arrived in the waiting area, a female trainer also came in and sat not far from him.

Time ticked by. About two minutes later, a staff member walked over, bypassed Kenji directly, and stopped in front of the female trainer.

"Miss, this way, please," the staff member said respectfully.

Kenji looked up, frowning involuntarily.

The female trainer also seemed surprised. She glanced at Kenji but still stood up to follow the staff member.

"Excuse me, I believe I arrived earlier than this lady," Kenji stood up. Although displeased, he kept his tone as calm as possible.

The staff member looked apologetic. "I'm sorry, sir, but this is the Gym Leader's rule: ladies first for Gym Battles."

"..."

"Um, excuse me... Miss, this gentleman did arrive first. You should let him go first." Before Kenji could speak, the girl spoke up first. This surprised Kenji, and he couldn't help but take a closer look at her.

"This..." The staff member looked hesitant. But seeing the girl's sincere and firm attitude, she could only nod and turn to Kenji. "Then... sir, this way, please."

Kenji nodded. Before leaving, he exchanged a glance with the girl. She smiled apologetically at him, and Kenji returned a friendly smile.

Leaving the waiting area, Kenji followed the staff member to the battle arena.

In the trainer's box stood a man wearing a white tank top, revealing bronzed skin. He had a square face and somewhat small eyes.

This unremarkable-looking man was none other than the Summit Gym Leader, Brockton.

"Hm? Xiao Fang, didn't you say a female trainer had arrived?" Brockton's face fell instantly when he saw Kenji. He looked at the staff member beside Kenji with displeasure.

"Gym Leader, that trainer insisted on letting this gentleman go first," the staff member quickly replied, emphasizing that it was the female trainer's request.

Brockton nodded, not pursuing it further. His gaze swept over Kenji, and he looked slightly surprised. The young man before him seemed familiar, as if he had seen him somewhere before.

But Brockton generally had no interest in men, so he didn't bother thinking about it. He said indifferently, "Then let's start quickly. I'm in a hurry."

His tone was impatient.

Kenji walked silently into the trainer's box, gripping a Pokéball tightly.

"This match..."

The referee announced the rules, then swung the green flag down sharply.

"Battle begin!"

"Go!!"

"Go!!—"

Two red lights flew onto the field.

"ROOOAR!!!!—"

A roar echoed. The atrocity of the deep! Gyarados appeared! Its terrifying aura instantly swept across the battlefield.

Since starting his journey, Gyarados hadn't stepped onto a competition stage for some time.

Initially, Kenji hadn't planned to send out Gyarados first. He intended to train the lower-leveled Vigoroth and Pupitar.

But now, Kenji had changed his mind.

He wanted to end this battle in the most satisfying, cathartic way possible.

And the violent, battle-hungry Gyarados undoubtedly best suited Kenji's needs.

On the other side, Brockton also sent out his first Pokémon: a Solrock.

Solrock

Level: 50

Type: Rock/Psychic

Ability: Levitate ( immune to Ground-type moves)

Potential: C+

"Dragon Dance."

Kenji's tone was incredibly flat.

Hearing the command, Gyarados immediately began to perform Dragon Dance in place.

"Taunt."

Facing a Gyarados choosing to boost itself on the spot, Brockton instinctively commanded.

But as Brockton's voice fell, the Solrock on the field acted as if it hadn't heard anything. It ignored Brockton's command and froze in place.

Under the dual pressure of Intimidate and Pressure, the level 53 Gyarados successfully controlled Solrock with its aura.

Brockton noticed this anomaly immediately, but it was too late.

Gyarados had completed its first Dragon Dance.

Kenji issued no further commands, allowing Gyarados to continue using Dragon Dance in place, preparing for the battle ahead.

Although Kenji disliked Brockton, the man was a Provincial Gym Leader and not incompetent. A heavy aura emanated from him.

It was Brockton's special ability: blessing Rock-type Pokémon with power derived from the earth and stone.

With Brockton's help, Solrock finally woke from Gyarados's intimidation.

"Power Gem!"

"Dragon Ascent Waterfall!"

Solrock's body glowed white, condensing dense Rock-type energy on its surface.

Then, it transformed into a beam of light, blasting straight toward Gyarados.

On the other side, Gyarados twisted its body, performing Dragon Dance while simultaneously executing Waterfall, charging toward Solrock.

"Dragon Ascent Waterfall" was a combination move Kenji had learned from Marina's Kabutops.

Kabutops used Aqua Jet plus Swords Dance, while Gyarados used Waterfall plus Dragon Dance.

Combining a buff move with an attack move was very difficult. Kenji had tried to teach Gyarados before, but it always fell short.

It wasn't until Kabutops personally demonstrated it recently that Gyarados finally mastered it.

At this moment, Gyarados had become a water-forged dragon, churning its massive body as it charged toward Solrock.

boosted by two Dragon Dances, Gyarados's speed was enough to easily dodge Solrock's Power Gem.

By the time Gyarados reached Solrock, the third Dragon Dance was complete.

Protect!!!

A pale green barrier instantly lit up in front of Solrock, standing between it and Gyarados.

However, this seemingly impregnable Protect barrier was fragile before a Gyarados with three Dragon Dances—especially since Gyarados was equipped with the Aegis of the Legion, the bane of barrier moves.
