Chapter 10 - The Family Meeting

The Su Mansion exuded elegance, bathed in the golden glow of crystal chandeliers reflecting off the marble floors. Outside, silent gardens were safeguarded by loyal men of the Su family, while inside the main hall buzzed with life as guests reunited after years, filled with excitement and intrigue. Each arrived with their own hopes and hidden agendas, ready to navigate familial ties and rivalries.

Su Ruoyan stood at the top of the grand staircase, her posture straight, her expression calm even as her heart thrummed faintly beneath her ribs. Below, her father, Su Haoran, greeted guests one by one, his dignified presence commanding instant respect. Beside him, her eldest brother, Su Chengyuan, was already engaged in quiet conversation with several upper-class leaders, his voice low and authoritative.

Ruoyan stood at the edge of the gathering, the familiar atmosphere igniting memories of a life once filled with privilege. Once the beloved daughter of the Su clan, she revelled in admiration, but tonight demanded a different presence. As she scanned the room of elegantly dressed nobles, she understood that her return would shift something among them. Those who recognised her would know she was back, though they would think twice before daring to speak her name aloud. The unspoken rules of the nobles were clear, where image was everything. In this world steeped in family legacy, whispers and veiled glances possessed more weight than any spoken word.

"Are you ready?" The question came from Su Yichen, who stood beside her in full military dress, his presence both grounding and intimidating. His dark eyes searched hers, assessing her readiness for the night ahead.

Ruoyan turned slightly, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "Of course, as ready as I can be," she replied with a hint of excitement in her voice, feeling the butterflies in her stomach as she anticipated what was to come.

Yichen paused to take in her profile, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "You embody everything a Su daughter should be," he said with a nod. "But remember, tonight isn't just about your return. It's a vital moment to remind everyone that the Su family's legacy is alive and well. You carry our heritage, a bond that can never be severed, and that is something compelling." She smiled faintly, sensing the weight of the moment. "I understand, brother."

Below, Su Haoxuan gestured for the others to join him in their descent, while Su Ruoyan took a deep, shuddering breath, adjusting the silver shawl draped around her shoulders. The fabric felt cool and electrifying against her skin, an omen of the dramatic entrance she was about to make. As she glided down the steps, her gown shimmered like liquid moonlight, captivating the attention of everyone in the room. Some gasped in recognition with shock etched on their faces, while others were left speechless, caught between awe and fear, too wary to break the tension in the air.

The Su family slid into their seats at the grand, elongated table, heartbeats echoing in the hall as they locked eyes with the esteemed elders and representatives of the allied clans. An electric charge filled the air, blending ceremonial grandeur with an undercurrent of tension. The elites knew that Su had only summoned their allies for reasons, making this gathering a moment where every spoken word was a carefully crafted piece of a game that stretched far beyond mere conversation, hinting at alliances forged, secrets unveiled, and destinies intertwined.

Su Haoran stood, raising his glass slightly. "It has been too long since we last gathered like this. Tonight, we celebrate not only friendship among old families but also the assurance that our legacy endures." He commanded the room's attention effortlessly.

Polite murmurs accompanied his words, an acknowledgement of the alliance and history they shared. Then Su Chengyuan took over, his tone measured and authoritative. "The Su Corporation is entering a period of strategic expansion, and to that end, we will be reviewing partnerships and alliances with families who share our values and vision."

A few heads turned, curiosity flickering in their eyes. They all knew this wasn't purely about business. There was an undercurrent of power and influence that ran deep in every interaction.

Ruoyan watched quietly with her neutral expression, while her brothers, who were experts at handling the crowd, were offering enough to maintain trust to keep power firmly in their hands. It was a delicate balance, one that had been maintained for generations.

As the conversation pivoted toward family affairs, Elder Wu leaned in, his eyes sparkling with a mix of intrigue and mischief. "Chairman Su," he began, his voice smooth yet teasing, "your family appears to be thriving beautifully, but I couldn't help but notice this lovely lady by your wife's side. Could it be your daughter? The one who bravely chose to marrying someone from the middle class?" He smiled, feigning curiosity, but the glint in his eye suggested he was eager for the story behind her choice.

The question cut through the air like a knife, and the tension in the room was palpable. Ruoyan's grip on her glass tightened, her calm exterior barely concealing the storm brewing inside. How dare they?

Su Haoran remained unfazed, his voice cold as ice. "What a great observation, Elder Wu. Of course, it's my daughter. It's been ages since she last graced us with her presence, and we thought this gathering was the perfect chance to remind her of her roots." His unyielding gaze met Elder Wu's, betraying none of the fury that surged within.

"Oh, what an interesting coincidence, President Su. Recently, I've been hearing news about conglomerate's daughter beingy divorced by someone from the middle class, and it aligns perfectly with your daughter's return," he stated confidently.

Su Haoran gazed intently at Elder Wu, but before he could utter a word, a commanding voice broke through the tension at the table. "If the news is right or wrong, does Elder Wu believe he deserves any explanation?" Su Yichen's aura was almost palpable, radiating authority and dominance in the room.

Elder Wu felt a shiver run down his spine at the sound of Su Yichen's commanding voice. "It's just a rumour, after all," he stammered, glancing nervously around. "I know it doesn't involve your sister. I was merely curious about her disappearance over these past years. Fine, fine, I'll sit here quietly."

Before he could say more, Su Chengyuan's calm, authoritative voice cut through the tension like a knife. "Our family has never known division, Elder Wu. Not in blood, not in loyalty." The weight of his words hung in the air, silencing any further inquiries and reinforcing the unyielding respect that enveloped the Su clan.

Moments later, the tension was dissolved back into casual business chatter, but Ruoyan could sense her father's unspoken anger simmering just below the surface. A master of maintaining composure, even he wouldn't be able to entirely mask his displeasure at the probing questions that were bound to come.

When the meeting finally adjourned, the guests were escorted toward the dining hall, leaving Ruoyan lingering behind with her family, the echoes of polite laughter fading into the distance.

Su Haoran would exhale, his expression unreadable. "They will still watch us closely," he might murmur. "Like vultures circling, waiting for a weakness."

"We've given them none," Chengyuan would reply smoothly, adjusting his cuffs. "But we should prepare for whispers. They'll sense something is about to change tonight."

Haoxuan glance toward Ruoyan. Su Ruoyan's lips curve slightly, a hint of defiance playing at the corners. "Then let them wonder. Mystery is more powerful than exposure. They can speculate all they want."

Her father would give a rare approving nod, a glint of pride in his eyes. "You've learned well." She tilted her head, an assured smirk playing on her lips. "It's from the best, naturally."

Yichen crossed his arms, his expression still wary. "Even so, we need to tighten the information flow. The Lu family still holds sway in the business circle. If they catch wind of your true identity, it could spell trouble."

"Don't worry, I've got it covered," Haoxuan replied firmly. "Our media contacts are reliable. Nothing will slip out without our go-ahead."

Yet, a subtle unease lingered in the air, an awareness that the real challenge was only starting. Ruoyan turned toward the tall windows, her gaze fixed on the night sky as raindrops streaked against the glass. "I prefer to let them wonder," she said calmly. "I want them to think I'm out of the picture. The longer they believe that, the more reckless they'll become."
