The rhythmic hum of the tires against the wet asphalt filled the silence between them. Rain fell steadily, blurring the headlights into streaks of white as the black SUV sped through the forest road that led away from the city.
Isabelle stirred slightly in the passenger seat, her head resting against the cool glass. Her fingers twitched before she murmured something incoherent. The faint color returning to her cheeks made Sebastian's chest unclench for the first time since she'd collapsed.
He shouldn't have let her get that worked up.

Sebastian's jaw tightened as he glanced at her. The hospital doctor's words still echoed in his head.
