The answer is simple—it does the same thing, but better.
Cultivation focuses on storing mana in the Core, while Body Refining channels that mana directly into the body, enhancing every aspect of it. The result is exponential growth.
For instance, a refined body makes every skill, spell, and ability far more potent.
Cultivators rely on spells to protect their skin; Body Refiners can harden it naturally.
Without such reinforcement, a Cultivator who takes a close-range hit would have their skin burned or torn instantly.
That's why Body Refining is so crucial.

For a moment, I thought we'd been caught—but no one said a word.
Syr cried quietly on my shoulder for several minutes before pulling away, cheeks red as she avoided everyone's gaze.
"I'm sorry, Kael," she said softly. "I was just... scared. I didn't expect it to hurt that much."
"It's normal," I told her. "You're still young. That's why I told you not to try for Silver Rank until you're at least ten."
I continued stroking her hair as she nodded and hugged me even tighter.
Normally, any boy my age would be thrilled to be hugged by a girl...
But right then, I was certain we'd been exposed.
My family's expressions were far from normal.
