Both their faces immediately widened with shock and Mum raised an eyebrow, clearly confused.
"Why not?" She asked, her voice stern.
But I stared at them calmly. "It's because of Callum, Mum. He deserved that position, not me."
Dad's gaze was fixed on me, his jaw set tight. Mum sat opposite him, her back straight, eyes sharp as a hawk's. I could already tell she was already boiling inside, but just keeping it cool.
"Callum's been working in the company for years now," I added, breaking the silence. "I thought he would be taking over Highridge Holdings after you retire."
Mum's frown deepened. "Callum?" she repeated.
"Yes, Mum."
Then dad finally turned to look at me, his expression was calm.
"Riley, your brother's doing well as Director, but he can't lead the legacy I built. Only you can do that." His tone left no space for argument.
