#35Chapter Thirty-One: Maniacal Laughter
The evening breeze was already intoxicating, but the slightly biting cold wind of the late night made the clown's face, which carried both comedy and tragedy, appear in a burst of laughter.
"Oh, my dear Officer Matt, what are you trying to say? Did I hear you right? You want the Joker, who has regained his freedom, back into prison, back into that damned cage..."
The clown speaks in a comedic, colloquial tone, as if he were saying something incredibly unbelievable in the world.
"No...you wouldn't think that way. You'll be most heartbroken if the Joker goes into that damned Blackgate prison, because losing the Joker will be the saddest moment of your lives..."
Matt's dark face flushed slightly with anger at the Joker's words.
"Damn it...you're talking complete nonsense...Joker, everyone in Gotham City knows about your crimes...being locked up in jail forever is the best fate for you, and it's what we all want!!!"
Matt gripped the police pistol attached to the phone tightly, ready to fire without hesitation should the Joker make any unusual move.
Such vicious criminals must be dealt with in this way, because the clown is the most terrifying of them all.
A reckless madman! Red Hood, clown monster...
No Gotham City resident is without fear of it, and even Chief Commissioner Gordon is extremely wary of it.
"Officer Might, hahaha, don't be so tense! You're making me nervous too!"
The Joker began to walk step by step toward Matt!
Thump!
A flash of light, and a bullet struck between the Joker's legs, missing its mark, but Matt did it on purpose—as a warning.
"Joker, I'm warning you again, don't try to cross my line, or I'll kill you right here!"
A fierce glint flashed in Matt's eyes. He was absolutely serious. If the Joker overstepped his bounds again, he would really shoot him dead, even if it meant Commissioner Gordon's wrath.
Matt is exceptional in his ability to become Commissioner Gordon's right-hand man, and his decisiveness is one of his strengths.
"Oh, look at our renowned Officer Might, so calm even now. But have you really seen things clearly...? What does Officer Might think is going on right now..."
The Joker seemed completely unconcerned about the gun in Matt's hand, even though it could take his life in one shot. What was there to be afraid of? The Joker felt no fear... nor was he afraid of death...
Because the Joker is immortal!!
Cold sweat began to drip from Matt's forehead, which was very noticeable on his prominent forehead. He didn't know when, but at least a dozen fully armed criminals had surrounded him. His police officers had just recovered from their shock when they were pointed at by a mass of gun barrels and had their feet shot through, letting out painful screams.
Matt's eyes were filled with complex emotions, and the pistol he was pointing at the Joker began to waver hesitantly.
Suddenly, the Joker strode forward, snatched the pistol from Matt's hand, and tripped him, executing a wrestling move.
"Officer Matt, I was so nervous just now. If you had actually shot me, I would have been dead for sure... But why did you hesitate? You had so many chances!"
The Joker handcuffed Matt's hands behind his back with the handcuffs around his waist, sat on Matt's back, and yawned as he spoke.
"I think Officer Might knows that too, that he doesn't want to kill the Joker, that he wants the Joker to live, so that the residents of Gotham City won't discover that everyone in the Gotham City Police Department is so mediocre, incompetent, and even corrupt…"
The clown's words were incredibly low and somber, as if each word was a dagger piercing Matt's heart.
However, he was a man of strong will and wouldn't be so easily swayed. He firmly told the clown, "You will eventually be brought to justice. The net of heaven is vast, and though its meshes are wide, nothing escapes it..."
The Joker was naturally aware of this, and he became unusually interested in Officer Matt, a wide smile spreading across his face.
"Officer Might, if tomorrow's headlines are that the Gotham City Police Department is powerless, barely able to resist the Joker's rescue team, and the Joker has been kidnapped, I don't think you'd want to see that kind of news…"
The Joker chuckled and said, "So I secretly took control of the Gotham City Daily News. Do you think tomorrow's headlines will satisfy you, me, and everyone else?"
Officer Might had a bad feeling and shouted anxiously, "Joker, your plot won't succeed! Whatever your plot is, it will be stopped by Batman!"
"Hahaha... my dear Batman... he's actually the same kind of person as me, believe it or not, he's the only one in all of Gotham who's like me..."
Suddenly, the clown seemed to have thought of something, or perhaps triggered something, and began to burst into uncontrollable laughter. The laughter was incredibly exaggerated and the frequency was unprecedented, to the point that Matt even experienced some mental hallucinations, and a faint smile appeared on his lips, but he controlled it with a firm will.
What exactly happened...?
Matt was surprised to find that his officers were also smiling.
Even some of the Joker's henchmen who weren't wearing masks wore the same smile.
It was as if some inexplicable force had descended upon this place, causing them to maintain the same smiles.
The clown's laughter continued, but it gradually subsided, though the smile on his face almost filled half of his face.
The Joker said to Matt, "Officer, I won't kill you. On the contrary, I'll let you go..."
"After all, isn't this a matter of police-community cooperation?"
The Joker used the pistol he had stolen from Matt to shoot him in both legs. With a muffled groan, blood slowly began to flow from Matt's legs.
"I have to change my tune. Gotham City now has more than just the Joker and Batman; there's another one… How interesting… How really interesting…"
The Joker took the dark suit hat from his henchman, took a glove from his bag, kissed it, and then tossed it to Officer Matt.
"Then let's go back, officers!"
Instead of returning directly to his lair, the Joker and his men went purposefully to a place he sensed, a place that silently drew him in.
Those were his new kindred spirits, new kindred spirits besides Batman...
