She hooked an arm through mine and dragged me out the door.

Milo followed reluctantly, muttering something that sounded like a defeated prayer.

I glanced back once before stepping into the sunlight.

Alex stood in the doorway, watching meleave.

Silent and tense.

Trying not to care… and failing miserably.

My heart gave one slow, traitorous twist.

And I followed Eva to the car.

The sunlight hit my face the moment we stepped outside, and I didn't realize how tightly I'd been breathing inside that house until the air hit my lungs like something new. Eva practically dragged me across the driveway while Milo trailed behind us like a man heading for execution.

Eva's car was a sleek black convertible that looked way too dramatic for this early in the day. She shoved me into the passenger seat with the enthusiasm of someone throwing a friend into a pool.

Milo climbed into the back with a long-suffering sigh.

"This is not part of the job description."
