Claudia stepped forward, placing her hands gently on Calista's shoulders. "Come on," she murmured softly. She steered the grieving mother toward the house, guiding her inside.
John stood face to face with Isaac.
The two men had never liked each other. Their disagreements over pack decisions and policies were practically legendary at this point.
But tonight…
Tonight Isaac's son had died protecting John's son.
And suddenly all those old grudges felt very small.
John opened his mouth. "Elder…"
Isaac lifted a hand slightly and shook his head. His face looked carved from stone. "Did he go peacefully?" Isaac asked.
That was all that mattered to him.
Just that his son had not suffered longer than necessary.
That the Moon goddess had taken him herself.
John nodded slowly.
"With a smile on his face." John answered.
Isaac closed his eyes. His head dipped slightly, and he shook it once, slowly. "Thank you."
