Chapter 96 - Scyther VS Mightyena

The initial Practical Combat lessons are arranged so that each class focuses on a different type. Today was the Water type. Once all types have been covered, the students will move on to practical battles among themselves.

It is worth noting that there is more than one teacher for Practical Combat. There are also several assistant teachers. They are responsible for commanding Pokémon to battle against the students. Of course, the teacher would go easy on the students.

Next, Teacher Mo told the other students to go and gain some battle experience, while the ten who would participate in the Freshmen Tournament were called aside.

Teacher Mo began, "For every practical combat lesson from now on, you will engage in a practical battle with me. First, you will use the school's Pokémon, and then you will use your own Pokémon for the practical battles."

Then, Teacher Mo released one of his Pokémon.

Mightyena, the Bite Pokémon.

Type: Dark.

Abilities: Intimidate, Quick Feet.

Hidden Ability: Moxie.

Mightyena's main color was gray. Black fur covers its tail, back, and limbs. The fur on its back was dense and split into two rows. Its pupils were red, and the whites of its eyes were yellow.

Mightyena was a Pokémon from the Hoenn Region. The teacher mentioned it in class, so everyone recognized it immediately.

After appearing on the rocky field, Mightyena stared fiercely at Eichi and the others.

They felt a little nervous. Eichi activated his Eye of the Bug Emperor. This Mightyena had an Excellent Talent and an Experienced Rank.

Teacher Mo looked at their expressions and laughed, "This one was only hatched recently. Its level is similar to your Pokémon, so who wants to go first?"

No one stepped forward. Everyone collectively turned their gaze toward Eichi.

Eichi was a little helpless, so he walked out and stood opposite Teacher Mo. Eichi's expression instantly became serious.

"Come out, Scyther."

Scyther's figure swiftly appeared on the rocky ground.

Why use Scyther instead of Beedrill? Because Mightyena's energy level has only recently entered the Experienced Rank, which is similar to Scyther's. Using Beedrill would be a bit like bullying, and it wouldn't be much of a training exercise.

Teacher Mo looked at Scyther and praised it, "This Scyther is very well trained."

Eichi smiled and said, "Thank you for the compliment, Teacher Mo. I'm starting now."

Teacher Mo laughed, "You go first."

Eichi commanded, "Then I won't hold back. Scyther, Fury Cutter."

Scyther glared and charged toward Mightyena. Seeing Scyther charge, Teacher Mo also began giving instructions to Mightyena.

"Mightyena, use Scary Face."

Dark-type energy overflowed from its body, and Mightyena showed a ghostly expression. In Scyther's eyes, there seemed to be a huge, ghastly face right in front of it. Scyther was startled for a moment, and its speed instantly dropped.

As its speed decreased, "Mightyena, use Double Team."

Just as Scyther was about to attack Mightyena, Mightyena instantly split into a dozen duplicates, surrounding Scyther.

Scyther was somewhat confused and couldn't distinguish the real one. It attacked a few randomly, but none of them were the original.

"Mightyena, use Fire Fang."

Scyther had just struck down one of Mightyena's duplicates, but the real Mightyena was right next to that duplicate. The distance between the two was too short, and Scyther had no time to dodge.

Flames instantly erupted from Mightyena's mouth, and it bit down on Scyther's body. The Fire type counters the Bug type, so the effect of this Fire-type move was significant. Scyther was immediately wounded by the bite.

Teacher Mo is indeed worthy of being a Practical Combat teacher. From the start, Scyther had fallen into a trap. This must have been a tactic specifically designed for Mightyena. When an opponent Pokémon charges, it uses the Scary Face move to reduce speed, preparing for the subsequent Double Team, which then surrounds the opponent.

The opponent, unable to tell which one is real, falls into a panic and attacks randomly. Then, the three Fang moves are used. Most Pokémon types will be countered, taking massive damage, and then finished off with one more move. Sure enough, after the hit, Teacher Mo gave another instruction.

"Mightyena, press the advantage! Use Fire Fang again."

After Mightyena bit Scyther with Fire Fang, Scyther swung its scythe, attempting to hit Mightyena's body.

Mightyena quickly retreated backward and then used Fire Fang again.

Just as Mightyena was about to bite Scyther, Teacher Mo felt he already had victory in his grasp.

But Eichi did not think so. It was too early to celebrate.

"Scyther, use Hidden Power."

Mightyena's mouth was ablaze with fire, its expression ferocious, and it was only a few centimeters away from Scyther, about to clamp down.

Scyther's eyes snapped open. It instantly shot a pillar of fire from its mouth, striking Mightyena's abdomen. After being hit by the pillar of fire, the fur on Mightyena's body immediately caught fire.

Mightyena quickly rolled several times on the ground to put out the fire.

The effect was significant. Mightyena had clearly sustained considerable damage.

Teacher Mo said, "Is that Hidden Power Fire type? That's quite good."

The students watching had thought Eichi was about to lose, but they never expected Eichi to counterattack.

The battle continued. Mightyena, after being thrown to the ground, very quickly got back up to continue fighting.

"Scyther, use Agility."

Scyther, catching its breath in place, vibrated its wings and swiftly charged toward Mightyena. Its speed had drastically increased. Scyther used extreme speed to confuse Mightyena, appearing here one moment and there the next.

Seeing Scyther use Agility, Teacher Mo changed tactics: "Mightyena, use Sand Attack."

Mightyena, upon hearing the command, seemed to find its focus. It used all four limbs, constantly digging and kicking the ground. A large amount of sand was then sent flying in all directions.

Affected by the sand, Scyther's speed dropped, and its visibility was also compromised. It had difficulty seeing Mightyena's location. While Eichi and Teacher Mo were battling, Tetsu was also chatting with Hirota off the field.

Tetsu stood next to Hirota and asked, "Hirota, given the current situation, who do you think will win?"

Hirota had been very quiet recently, but he spoke up, "I think Eichi will win."

Tetsu said, "You have so much confidence in him. I think the opposite; I think Teacher Mo will win."

After saying that, Hirota added, "You haven't battled Eichi, so you haven't felt how strong Eichi is."

The scene returned to Scyther and Mightyena. The situation was now somewhat unfavorable for Eichi.

"Mightyena, use Shadow Ball."

Hm? Not good. If iScyther gets hit, we will definitely lose.

An energy sphere condensed in Mightyena's mouth at a visible speed. Eichi's mind was racing. He suddenly remembered something from his usual training.

"Scyther, use Swords Dance."

Scyther, without panicking, spun rapidly in place, blowing away the surrounding sand. At this moment, the Shadow Ball was ready and shot toward Scyther.
