The moon hung high over the capital of the demon realm, its silver light slanting over the black stone spires of the castle. The night was alive with quiet motion, the occasional flutter of wings or distant hoot of a bird breaking the otherwise still air. In the streets below, shadows moved like sentient things, but none of it concerned the people in the castle.
High above the city, in another building that could also pass for a castle but not as beautiful as the demon King's residence, a figure adjusted her gown with meticulous care, checking each pearl in her hair, the faint glimmer of enchanted jewels threading through her braids. Seraphielle's reflection in the silver-framed mirror caught her attention. She leaned slightly closer, brushing her fingers over the soft velvet of her gown, and allowed herself a slow, appreciative smile.
