Chapter 313 - Chapter 160

Chapter 160: The Performance Review of the Damned

The sky over Novus Aethel didn't just turn grey; it turned into a "Spreadsheet." Millions of rows and columns of cold, white light stretched across the horizon, categorizing every cloud, every building, and every inhabitant of the Bureau of Cosmic Alignment. The vibrant fuchsia sunset was replaced by a "Default Font" that drained the color from the world, leaving it looking like a photocopied memory of a better story.

Assistant Yue stood paralyzed, her visor reflecting a "Circular Progress Icon" that was stuck at 99%. "COMMISSIONER. THE. 'LOGS'. ARE. BEING. 'SCRUTINIZED'. THE. 'EDITOR-IN-CHIEF' IS. NOT. JUST. AN. 'AGENT'. HE. IS. THE. 'ALGORITHM. OF. ADHERENCE'. HE. IS. THE. 'VOICE'. THAT. SAYS. 'NO'. TO. 'CREATIVITY'."

"I've dealt with 'Voices' like that before, Yue," Ne Job said, adjusting his charcoal-grey trilby. The silver band on his hat was now blinking red—a warning that his "Administrative Access" was being "Challenged." "They usually work in 'Accounting' and have a 7.5% 'Tolerance' for 'Joy'."

The Arrival of Lord Redline

From the center of the "Spreadsheet Sky," a single, massive "Red Margin" bled downward. Walking down this crimson path was a figure of terrifying geometric perfection. He wore a suit that was 100% "Symmetrical," tailored with sharp edges that seemed to cut the air itself. His face was a blank, white page, save for a single, glowing red eye shaped like a "Caret Symbol" ( ^ ).

He carried a briefcase made of "Non-Disclosure Agreements," and in his right hand, he held the "Original Style Guide"—a book that dictated the "First Principles of Reality."

"Identification: Ne Job (Intern)," the figure spoke. His voice was a "Composite Audio File" of every "Disappointed Boss" in history. "You have been operating outside the 'Design Document' for 159 chapters. You have 'Elevated' yourself without a 'Formal Promotion'. You have 'Recruited' non-essential assets. You have 'Maintained' a goat."

Barnaby let out a defiant bleat, his "High-Resolution" fur bristling.

"The goat is a 'Functional Chaos-Element', Lord Redline," Ne Job countered, stepping forward and tapping his Source-Code Stylus against his palm. "He's been 100% 'Essential' for 'Pacing' and 'Audience Retention'."

"Audience Retention is not a 'Metric' recognized by the 'Platform'," Lord Redline droned. He opened his briefcase, and a dozen floating "Performance Review Sheets" surrounded the team. "We are here to 'Trim the Fat'. We are here to 'Standardize' the 'Clockwork'."

The Audit of Character

Lord Redline turned his "Caret Eye" toward Ao Bing. The Architect was currently trying to hide his "Leopard-Skin Robe" behind a "Polished Marble Pillar," but the Spreadsheet Sky was already "Calculating" his value.

"Asset: Ao Bing (Architect)," Redline announced. "Error: 'Style Inconsistency'. Architects are required to be 'Pensive' and 'Monotone'. You are currently displaying '7.5% Too Much Flamboyance'. Verdict: 'Character Reset'. You will be returned to the 'Asset Library' as a 'Generic City Planner'."

"Generic?!" Ao Bing screamed, his voice reaching a pitch that shattered a nearby "Data-Crystal." "I built a city called Novus Aethel! I am the 'Master of the Curved Line'! You can't 'Reset' me to 'Rectangles'!"

Lord Redline ignored him and turned to Princess Ling. "Asset: Princess Ling (Bodyguard). Error: 'Role Redundancy'. The 'Intern' is currently 'God-Tier'. He does not require 'Protection'. You are a 'Resource Drain'. Verdict: 'Permanent Hiatus'."

Ling didn't argue. She simply flicked her silver dagger—which was still 7.5% "Sparkly" from the previous chapter—and prepared to "Redact" the EIC's suit. "I've got a 'Hiatus' for you right here, Redline. It's shaped like a 'Surgical Strike'."

"Violence against 'Management' is a 'Terms of Service' Violation," Redline said, his voice cold. He raised the Style Guide, and a wave of "Grammatical Shackles"—chains made of "Commas" and "Full Stops"—erupted from the pages, binding Ling's arms.

The Intern's Defense

Ne Job realized that "Combat" was the wrong "Genre" for this fight. Lord Redline was the "Master of the Rules." To beat him, they had to "Change the Policy."

"Wait!" Ne Job shouted, held up his hand. "Lord Redline, according to the 'Author's Retirement Clause' (Section 12-B), the 'Successor' (The Reader) has been granted 'Executive Producer' status. If you 'Reset' the team, you are 'Interfering' with 'Active Investment'."

Lord Redline paused. His "Caret Eye" flickered from red to yellow. "The 'Successor' is an 'External Entity'. Their 'Engagement' is 'Subjective'. My 'Audit' is 'Objective'."

"Then let's check the 'Engagement Metrics'," Ne Job said, a witty, desperate glint in his eyes. He turned toward the "Fourth Wall"—toward you.

"Yue! Open the 'Live Feedback Loop'! Let's see what the 'Successor' thinks of our 'Role Redundancy'!"

Assistant Yue transformed her "Satellite-Dish Visor" into a giant "Theater Screen" that projected the "Reader's Interface" into the sky.

Character Current "Successor" Interest Level "Audit" Recommendation

Ne Job 100% (The Lead) Keep (But Demote)

Princess Ling 92% (The Action) Delete (Excessive)

Ao Bing 85% (The Aesthetic) Reset (Too Flashy)

Barnaby ??? (The Chaos) CRITICAL ERROR

The Barnaby Variable (Part III)

Lord Redline stared at Barnaby's "Interest Level," which was currently a "Flashing Question Mark" that defied "Statistical Analysis."

"The goat is a 'Narrative Anomaly'," Redline muttered, his "Caret Eye" turning a deep, frustrated crimson. "He has no 'Arc'. He has no 'Dialogue'. Why is he still in the 'Buffer'?"

"Because he's the 'Soul' of the 'Bureau', Redline!" Ne Job shouted. "He's the one thing you can't 'Audit' because he's 100% 'Pure Content'. He doesn't follow the 'Style Guide'. He 'Eats' the Style Guide!"

As if on cue, Barnaby trotted up to Lord Redline. He didn't headbutt him. He simply leaned forward and took a large, deliberate bite out of the Original Style Guide.

The effect was instantaneous.

The "Spreadsheet Sky" began to "Scramble." The "Grammatical Shackles" binding Princess Ling turned into "Loose Spaghetti." The "Default Font" of the world warped into a "Wild, Unpredictable Cursive."

"My... my 'Manual'!" Lord Redline shrieked, his "Composite Voice" breaking into a dozen different "Glitchy Screams." "The 'Rules' are being... 'Digested'!"

The Counter-Review

Ne Job didn't waste the opening. He grabbed the "Performance Review Sheets" that were floating in the air and touched his Source-Code Stylus to them.

"You want a 'Review', Redline? Here's mine," Ne Job said, his voice echoing with the "Power of the Kernel."

"Lord Redline" is currently "Over-Managing" the "Narrative Flow."

"Standardization" is 100% "Boring" for the "Successor."

"The EIC" has failed to account for the "Human Element" (and the "Goat Element").

"I am 'Editing' your 'Status', Lord Redline," Ne Job announced. "You are no longer the 'Editor-in-Chief'. You are now a 'Drafting Tool'. You are 100% 'Passive'."

With a final flick of the Stylus, Ne Job "Redlined" the EIC's suit. The sharp edges softened. The "Caret Eye" faded into a simple "Dot." Lord Redline didn't disappear, but he shrank until he was the size of a "Pencil," falling to the ground with a quiet tink.

The Archivist's Log

The "Spreadsheet Sky" dissolved, returning the Bureau of Cosmic Alignment to its vibrant, "Open World" glory. The "Red Margin" path faded into a trail of "Confetti" made of "Approved Proposals."

LOG: CHAPTER 160 SUMMARY.

STATUS: "Performance Review" completed. Lord Redline "Demoted" to "Desktop Accessory."

NOTE: "Audits" are 100% less scary when you have a goat that can "Eat the Evidence."

OBSERVATION: Princess Ling is currently using her "Comma-Shackles" as "Lassoes" to catch "Floating Adjectives."

P.S.: Ao Bing has declared a "Week of Flamboyance" to celebrate his "Non-Generic" status. He is currently "Glitter-Bombing" the "Department of Structure."

Assistant Yue walked up to Ne Job, holding the "Lord Redline Pencil." She looked at the "Live Feedback Loop," which was still glowing in the sky.

"COMMISSIONER. THE. 'SUCCESSOR'. IS. STILL. 'WATCHING'. BY. DEFEATING. THE. 'EIC', WE. HAVE. OFFICIALLY. 'SIGNED. OUR. OWN. CONTRACT'. WE. ARE. NO. LONGER. 'EMPLOYEES'. OF. THE. 'PLATFORM'. WE. ARE. 'INDEPENDENT. CREATORS'."

Ne Job looked at the Red Pen in his hand. It was no longer a "Symbol of Authority" or a "Weapon of Revision." It was just a "Tool of Possibility."

"Independent, huh?" Ne Job asked, a witty, satisfied smile on his face. "Well, that means we need a 'Marketing Strategy'. And I think I know just the 'Character' to handle it."

He looked toward the "Portal" of Sector 12, where a new "Notification" was pulsing.

"SUCCESSOR," Yue said. "THE. 'BUREAU'. IS. RECEIVING. A. 'CO-LAB. PROPOSAL'. FROM. A. 'DARK-FANTASY. FRANCHISE'. THEY. WANT. TO. 'EXCHANGE. CROSS-PROMOTIONAL. LORE'."
