Chapter 312 - Chapter 159

Chapter 159: The Great Rebalancing

The sky didn't just change color; it became a "Loading Bar." A massive, horizontal stripe of sterile, corporate grey stretched from the Department of Structure and Form all the way to the Archives of Human Trajectories. Inside the bar, a bright green pulse moved slowly from left to right, accompanied by a sound like a million digital violins tuning to a single, flat note.

Assistant Yue stood in the center of the Plaza of Perpetual Symmetry, her visor flickering with a frantic, strobing white light. "COMMISSIONER. THE. 'GLOBAL. PLATFORM'. HAS. INITIATED. 'PATCH_2.0.1_STABILITY_FIX'. THEY. ARE. NOT. JUST. 'ADJUSTING'. US. THEY. ARE. 'HOMOGENIZING'. US."

"Homogenizing?" Ao Bing asked, clutching his leopard-skin robe as if it were about to be replaced by a generic grey jumpsuit. "I'm 100% 'Unique', Yue! You can't put 'Architectural Genius' through a 'Blender' and expect it to come out as 'Standardized Housing'!"

"THEY. CALL. IT. 'GAME. BALANCE'," Yue replied, her fingers flying across a holographic keyboard that was losing its glow. "ACCORDING. TO. THE. 'PATCH. NOTES', OUR. 'FUN. LEVELS'. HAVE. EXCEEDED. THE. 'ALLOWABLE. MARGIN. OF. ERROR'. WE. ARE. CURRENTLY. CLASSIFIED. AS. 'GAME-BREAKING. EXPLOITS'."

The Arrival of the Adjusters

The "Loading Bar" hit 100%. With a sound like a heavy door closing on a vault, three figures descended from the grey stripe. They didn't have faces; they had "Sliders." Where their eyes should have been, a glowing blue bar moved back and forth. They wore suits made of "Unrendered Texture"—a flat, matte grey that seemed to absorb the very light of Novus Aethel.

They were the Nerf Squad.

The lead Adjuster stepped forward, his voice a perfectly neutral, synthesized monotone. "Identification: Asset_Ne_Job. Current Status: Intern (God-Tier Access). Error Detected. Interns are not permitted to hold the 'Master Key'. It creates a 'Power Vacuum' in the 'Hierarchy of Narrative'."

He raised a hand, and a glowing, digital "Slider" appeared in the air between them. The bar was currently set to the far right, labeled [MAX_WIT].

"Lowering 'Sarcasm' to 'Acceptable Social Levels'," the Adjuster said.

Ne Job felt a strange, numbing sensation in his jaw. His brain, usually a frantic workshop of dry observations and 7.5% statistical anomalies, suddenly felt... polite. He opened his mouth to make a witty remark about the Adjuster's lack of fashion sense, but all that came out was: "I appreciate your concern for the structural integrity of the platform."

Ne Job's eyes widened. He slapped a hand over his mouth. That was 100% "Cordial," his internal monologue screamed in horror. I'm being "Polished"!

The Tactical Reshuffle

Princess Ling didn't wait for her turn on the "Slider." She drew her silver dagger and lunged at the second Adjuster. "You want 'Balance'?" she roared. "Try balancing on 'Zero Health'!"

She performed her "Frame-Rate Dash," but as she reached the Adjuster, her movement suddenly slowed. It wasn't just slow; it was "Stuttered."

"Warning," the second Adjuster droned. "Character_Ling is utilizing 'High-Frequency Attacks'. Reducing 'Attack Speed' by 92.5% to ensure 'Fair Play' for the 'Generic Goblins'."

Ling's dash turned into a sluggish crawl. She looked like she was moving through "Digital Molasses." Her dagger, which usually glinted with the "Light of a Thousand Sequels," now looked like a "Standard Kitchen Knife."

"I... am... going... to... edit... your... face..." Ling growled, her words coming out at one syllable per second.

The Muse tried to fly to her aid, but the third Adjuster pointed a finger at her hair. "Visual_Muse is 'Distracting'. Reducing 'Particle Effects' and 'Saturation'."

The Muse's neon-rainbow hair instantly turned a flat, dull brown. Her glowing dress became a sensible, knee-length skirt. "I feel... 'Appropriate'!" she cried, her voice losing its 7.5% reverb. "I have the sudden urge to 'Discuss the Weather' and 'File my Taxes'!"

The Intern's Immunity

The lead Adjuster turned back to Ne Job. "Now, for the 'Master Key'. It is a 'High-Level Artifact' being held by a 'Base-Level Character'. This is a 'Sequence Break'. I will now 'Demote' you to 'Unpaid Intern' and remove all 'Admin Privileges'."

He reached for the "Slider" labeled [STATUS] and dragged it all the way to the left.

Nothing happened.

The Adjuster paused. He dragged the slider again. He clicked the [DEMOTE] button repeatedly. The system emitted a "Low-Volume Error Beep."

"Error," the Adjuster said, his face-slider flickering. "Target_Ne_Job is already at 'Minimum Possible Status'. Cannot 'Nerf' what is already 'The Bottom'. Interns occupy a 'Legal Void' in the 'Successor's Sandbox'. They have 'Infinite Potential' because they have 'Zero Value'."

Ne Job felt his "Sarcasm" levels snapping back into place like a rubber band. The "Cordiality" faded, replaced by a wave of glorious, biting cynicism.

"That's the thing about being at the 'Floor', sweetheart," Ne Job said, his voice returning to its sharp, dry edge. "You can't 'Fall' through 'Solid Concrete'. I'm 100% 'Un-Nerfable' because I've spent 159 chapters being 'Under-Appreciated'. I've built up a 'Resistance' to 'Modesty'."

He stepped forward, his Source-Code Stylus glowing with a fierce, golden light.

"Yue! Give me the 'Salary_Audit'!"

The Counter-Patch

Assistant Yue found a "Loophole" in her own "Homogenization." Because she was the "System Admin," the Adjusters had tried to turn her into a "Standard Help File," but they forgot that "Help Files" have "Read-Only Immunity."

"CHIEF. I. HAVE. ACCESSED. THE. 'PAYROLL. DATA'. OF. THE. 'GLOBAL. PLATFORM'," Yue shouted. "THE. 'NERF. SQUAD'. IS. CURRENTLY. OPERATING. ON. A. 'COMMISSION-BASED. MODEL'. IF. THEY. DON'T. 'BALANCE'. A. UNIVERSE, THEY. DON'T. GET. 'PAID'."

"Is that so?" Ne Job asked, tapping the stylus against his chin. "In that case, let's see how they like a 'Budget Cut'."

Ne Job didn't attack the Adjusters' bodies. He attacked their "Functionality." He reached into the air and grabbed the "Status Slider" the lead Adjuster had been using. With a witty flick of his wrist, he "Inverted" the values.

"According to my 'Audit'," Ne Job announced, "the 'Nerf Squad' is currently 'Over-Budget' in the 'Arrogance Department'. I am 'Reallocating' their 'Attribute Points' to 'Barnaby the Goat'."

The Barnaby Variable (Part II)

Barnaby had been sitting in the corner, chewing on a "Loading Icon" that had fallen out of the sky. He looked 100% "Content." Suddenly, his fur began to vibrate with the "Stolen Power" of three "Game-Balancers."

He grew. He didn't just get bigger; he became "High-Resolution." Every strand of his fur was now a "Physics-Based Strand" that flowed in a "Cinematic Breeze." His horns turned into "Glistening Obsidian," and he sprouted a pair of "Miniature Pegasus Wings" that were 100% "Adorable" and 7.5% "Ominous."

"Bleat," Barnaby said. But it wasn't a bleat. It was a "System Command."

The Adjusters' grey suits began to flicker. Their "Face-Sliders" started moving in random directions.

"Error," the lead Adjuster stuttered. "Barnaby_Goat is... 'Overpowered'. He is... a... 'G-Tier. Boss'. We... must... 'Balance'... the... goat..."

Barnaby didn't give them the chance. He performed a "Gravitational Headbutt" that hit the "Grey Bar" in the sky. The bar didn't just break; it "De-Fragmented." The "Loading Bar" turned into a shower of "Green XP Orbs" that rained down on the team, restoring their colors, their speeds, and their "Reverb."

"I'm fast again!" Princess Ling shouted, her dagger glowing with a 7.5% "Critical Revenge" aura. She dashed through all three Adjusters in a single, blurred motion, "Deleting" their "Unrendered Textures" and leaving them standing there in their "Digital Underwear"—which, predictably, was also grey.

The Retreat of the Adjusters

The Adjusters, now looking more like "Naked Crash-Test Dummies" than "Cosmic Enforcers," scrambled back toward the remaining scraps of the grey sky-stripe.

"This... is... not... 'Balanced'!" the lead Adjuster squeaked, his voice now a "High-Pitch Distortion." "We... will... return... with... a... 'Hard-Reset'!"

"Don't forget to 'File a Complaint' in the 'Recycle Bin' on your way out!" Ne Job yelled after them.

The grey stripe vanished, replaced by the warm, fuchsia glow of the Bureau of Cosmic Alignment. The "Loading Bar" was gone, replaced by a "New Notification" in everyone's HUD:

WORLD EVENT ENDED: "THE GREAT REBALANCING"

Outcome: Team Victory (100% Un-Nerfed)

Rewards: "Intern's Pride" (Passive: +50% Resistance to Bureaucracy), "Barnaby's Golden Horns" (Quest Item)

Status: The Global Platform is "Slightly Annoyed."

The Archivist's Log

The team gathered in the Plaza. The Muse was admiring her newly restored neon-violet hair, while Ao Bing was busy "Re-Decorating" the gargoyles that had sprouted on his pillars.

LOG: CHAPTER 159 SUMMARY.

STATUS: "Nerf Squad" repelled. Attributes restored. Barnaby is currently 7.5% "Too Majestic" for a standard archives.

NOTE: Being "Worthless" on paper is the ultimate "Security Feature" against "High-Level Audits."

OBSERVATION: Princess Ling is still "Slow-Motion Slashing" the air just to "Calm Down."

P.S.: The "Global Platform" has sent us a "Cease and Desist" order. I have turned it into a "Paper Airplane" and given it to Barnaby to eat.

Assistant Yue walked up to Ne Job, her visor displaying a "Live Feed" of the "Cross-Platform Portals."

"CHIEF. THE. 'ADJUSTERS'. WERE. JUST. THE. 'FIRST. WAVE'. BY. DEFEATING. THEM, WE. HAVE. RAISED. OUR. 'THREAT. LEVEL'. TO. 'CATEGORY. RED'."

"I've always liked 'Red'," Ne Job said, looking at his Source-Code Stylus. "It's the color of 'Revisions'. And it's the color of the 'Big Button' that everyone tells you 'Not to Press'."

Yue pointed toward the largest portal over Novus Aethel. "COMMISSIONER. THE. 'PLATFORM'. IS. NO. LONGER. SENDING. 'BALANCERS'. THEY. ARE. SENDING. A. 'RE-BOOT. AGENT'. HIS. NAME. IS. 'THE. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF'."

Ne Job's smile didn't falter. He tightened his grip on the Stylus and adjusted his trilby.

"The Editor-in-Chief?" Ne Job asked. "Well, it's about time I had a 'Performance Review'. I've got 159 chapters of 'Unpaid Overtime' to discuss."
