The newly arrived team was very straightforward and did not put on a show of defense.
The two teams joined forces to shoot at the small mountain of Zombies piled up outside the city wall. Wang Zhi had only one magazine of ammunition left. After reloading, he did not continue shooting; this was part of his prior plan-to conserve some firepower just in case, unless the situation was extremely urgent.
The other team quickly finished their hundred rounds of ammunition and stood there momentarily, unsure what to do.
Wang Zhi glanced at the Zombies outside. The small mountain that had just formed had been broken down and would likely take some time to form a human ladder again.
"Will those Zombies that just rushed up here have gone inside?" White Crow asked.
"They probably won't, right? Falling from this height would break their legs," Fatty said.
"Even if their legs are broken, won't they still climb up and walk?" Duan Qingtian replied.
"There's nothing we can do. Those that fell, fell. This fog rolling in is really terrible timing!" Wang Zhi remarked.
"Quick, they're about to climb up! Are you out of bullets?" the other team asked as they approached.
Wang Zhi shook his head, indicating he had no spare bullets.
"Let's use knives to defend for now!" Wang Zhi said, looking at the Zombies already halfway up.
Hearing that everyone was out of bullets and preparing to use knives, the other team showed distress. Looking at the crazed Zombies outside the city wall, using knives undoubtedly increased the risk significantly. They did not want to take that chance, so they exchanged glances and ran toward the rear until they disappeared into the fog.
Seeing those people leave, Wang Zhi was not surprised; in times of great disaster, everyone flees for themselves.
"Wang Zhi! Supplies are coming. How is your situation over there?"
Old He, at the very front, said over the radio.
"It's okay. Another team came to support us just now, but we are almost out of bullets now!" Wang Zhi replied.
"The Guard Team's supplies will arrive shortly. Hold on."
"Understood, fire!"
Hearing Old He say supplies were coming, Wang Zhi and his group-not caring what the supplies were-first used up all the ammunition they had reserved.
After a while, four guards rushed over from the direction they had come. Two guards led the way, holding guns, while the two guards behind them carried a very heavy-looking metal crate.
"Ammunition resupply, quickly!" one of the guards in front said. The guards behind opened the iron crate, and a box full of bullets appeared before Wang Zhi.
"Jia Liuli, cover us," Wang Zhi said, immediately running to the iron crate. He found the bullets corresponding to their model and grabbed large handfuls, placing them on the ground.
The Guard Team was not stingy this time. Although they let Wang Zhi and his group take the ammunition, Wang Zhi alone ended up taking nearly two hundred rounds.
"That's enough, you guys move to the rear quickly, and be careful," Wang Zhi said, standing up again to shoot at the Zombies outside the wall.
"The clearing is almost done here. Should we switch positions?" Duan Qingtian said, looking down.
Wang zhi glanced around. The sky had already darkened, reducing the visible range from twenty meters to almost ten meters. They could barely make out how many Zombies were below the city wall, only vaguely seeing those that were climbing.
"It's been so long, why hasn't support arrived at this location?" Wang Zhi suddenly realized that the guards sent back earlier never seemed to have returned.
"Captain Wang, we have to run too, this place is too scary," Fatty said, his voice trembling as he looked at the gloomy surroundings.
Although their ammunition was sufficient, the ten-meter visibility truly made them uneasy.
"Run where! This is the safest place!" Wang Zhi leaned against the city wall, loading all the remaining bullets on the ground into the magazines.
"Where are you all?" You Luo asked over the radio.
"We are behind, Old He is at the very front. Old He, how are things on your end?"
"It's fine, not many Zombies here."
"Good, everyone gather at Old He's location, just keep moving forward," Wang Zhi replied.
Once the ten people were assembled, everyone finally relaxed.
"Why do I feel like there are fewer Zombies here?" Gray Wolf asked doubtfully.
"That's right, there are fewer gunshots too," Old He stated.
"What's going on? Did they all go to one place?"
"Shh! Did you hear that?" Wang Zhi told everyone to stop talking and listen carefully to the distance.
"Is that the sound of a machine gun?" Duan Qingtian vaguely heard the rapid popping sound of continuous fire.
"This... can they see their target? Just firing wildly over there?" Fatty exclaimed in shock.
"Listening to the sound, it seems to be coming from the city gate?" Su Muying said after listening for a moment.
"Then should we go over there, or continue guarding here?" You Luo asked.
Wang Zhi glanced at the Zombies below that hadn't managed to climb up for a long time and said, "Let's go, find the main force first."
The group advanced cautiously along the city wall. Wang Zhi could occasionally still see Zombie corpses on the ground; it seemed this location had been breached before.
Wang Zhi was examining the corpses on the ground when a red and white Zombie suddenly lunged out of the fog ahead-yes, it flew directly out of the mist with virtually no warning.
Wang Zhi, who was walking in the front, was instantly knocked down by the Zombie. Fortunately, Wang Zhi braced the barrel of his gun against the Zombie's neck, preventing it from biting him.
*Clang!* The instant Wang Zhi fell, Jia Liuli's blade split the Zombie's head right down the center. The blade finally struck Wang Zhi's gun, striking a spark.
"Are you alright?" Old He asked, seeing Wang Zhi knocked down.
"I'm fine. I just didn't expect these Zombies to have become so strong now; no wonder this place was lost," Wang Zhi said, shaking the blood off his gun.
"Maybe we shouldn't go over there? The visibility is so poor; I'm afraid their machine guns won't recognize friend from foe!" Fatty worriedly said.
"Fatty is right. Everyone is firing wildly right now; it would be easy to cause friendly fire," Su Muying agreed with Fatty's idea, which was rare for her.
"Fine! We'll go down at the next ladder access point and head to the Ready Room first to ask about the situation," Wang Zhi said, panting heavily. He had been quite shaken by that Zombie just now.
The group found the ladder access point, slid down, and began moving toward the south from the eastern part of Dawn City. At this moment, they were unsure if there were any zombies left inside the city.
The closer Wang Zhi got to the south, the more frequent and louder the gunfire became. It was clear the Guard Team had concentrated their defensive firepower at the city gate.
Meanwhile, a piercing alarm blared from the direction of the city gate. This alarm was different from the one the City Lord's Palace had sounded earlier.
Its volume was louder, more grating, and it originated directly from the city gate!
