Chapter 180 - The First Descent

IRONROOT — Chapter 179: The First Descent

The sky opened wider.

Not violently.

Not suddenly.

But slowly—like reality itself was peeling apart layer by layer.

Above Ardrath, the fracture stretched across the heavens in endless black veins, exposing the dead void beyond existence. Broken worlds drifted through that darkness like corpses abandoned in an infinite ocean.

And now—

Shapes were descending from it.

Dozens.

Perhaps hundreds.

No one could tell.

Because the human mind struggled to process their forms correctly.

Every time the eye focused on them, they changed.

Angular.

Liquid.

Humanoid.

Formless.

Wrong.

The city had stopped screaming.

That terrified Liora more than the destruction itself.

The people of Ardrath were hiding now, buried beneath ruins and fractured districts while abyssal roots crawled through the streets like veins beneath flesh.

The war above them no longer felt human.

It felt ancient.

Predatory.

Inevitable.

Kael stood motionless at the center of the ruined plaza, black roots twisting around his body in slow spirals. The marks across his skin had spread fully over the left side of his face now, forming jagged abyssal patterns beneath his eye.

Every pulse from the deeper Ironroot made them glow faintly.

Alive.

Watching.

And beneath the city—

The abyss waited.

Hungry.

"Kael."

Liora's voice was barely above a whisper.

He turned slightly toward her.

But the movement was delayed.

As though part of him existed somewhere deeper before returning to the surface.

"The roots are spreading through the lower districts," she said carefully. "If this keeps going—"

"I know."

His voice sounded distant.

Not emotionless.

Heavy.

Like every word had to travel upward through layers of pressure before reaching reality.

Valdrik stared upward at the descending army.

"We need a plan."

"No," Vaelith answered quietly.

Everyone looked toward him.

His pale eyes remained fixed on the fracture.

"We needed a plan before reality began collapsing."

Silence followed.

Because nobody disagreed.

The Devourer's army continued descending.

And now the city itself reacted to their presence.

Stone dissolved into black dust wherever their shadows touched. Veins beneath Ardrath dimmed and twisted. Entire sections of air flickered out of existence for fractions of a second before violently snapping back into place.

The world was becoming unstable.

Astra ignited her flames instinctively.

Or tried to.

Only weak sparks flickered around her fingertips before collapsing.

She cursed under her breath.

"It's getting worse."

"It's learning faster," Soryn replied.

"No," Kael said softly.

Everyone turned toward him.

His eyes remained fixed upward.

"It already learned."

A pause.

"Now it's applying."

The words settled coldly across the plaza.

Because deep down—

Everyone understood he was right.

The Devourer was no longer experimenting.

No longer adapting slowly.

It understood enough now to begin systematic correction.

And the first target was reality itself.

One of the descending entities suddenly stopped midair.

Its shape flickered violently.

Then—

It vanished.

Dren frowned.

"…Where did it go?"

Kael's expression changed instantly.

"Move."

The entity appeared directly inside the plaza.

No sound.

No arrival.

No transition.

One moment empty space existed there—

The next moment something impossible stood among them.

Tall.

Humanoid.

Its body resembled fractured obsidian layered over empty darkness. White cracks pulsed across its surface like wounds stitched together incorrectly.

And where its face should have been—

Nothing.

Only a shifting void.

The pressure around it crushed the ground inward.

Valdrik attacked instantly.

Lightning erupted from his hammer with a roar.

The strike reached halfway toward the entity—

Then unraveled into strands of dim static before vanishing completely.

The entity tilted its head.

Studying.

Learning.

Astra launched flames immediately afterward.

The fire bent sideways unnaturally before collapsing into black ash.

"It's rewriting attack vectors," Vaelith warned.

The entity moved.

Not quickly.

Not slowly.

Its movement simply ignored normal distance.

One instant it stood several meters away.

The next—

Its hand pierced directly through Ignivar's chest.

Liora screamed.

Ignivar froze.

Blood spilled slowly from his mouth.

His eyes widened in shock.

The entity had not struck him violently.

It had reached through his armor, through his body, through the manifested force protecting him—

As though none of it had ever existed.

Then it pulled back.

Ignivar collapsed immediately.

"IGNIVAR!" Astra dropped beside him.

Golden flames erupted desperately around her hands, trying to seal the wound.

The flames flickered weakly.

Failing.

The entity turned toward her.

Kael moved instantly.

The abyssal roots exploded outward with terrifying force, smashing into the entity from multiple directions.

This time—

The impact landed.

Reality distorted violently around the collision point as the roots wrapped around the construct's body.

The entity resisted immediately.

Its surface flickered between existence layers.

Trying to separate.

Trying to adapt.

But Kael pushed harder.

The roots tightened with crushing force.

Black fractures spread through the air itself.

The entity looked toward him.

And for the first time—

It reacted.

Not emotionally.

Not fearfully.

But cautiously.

Kael felt the deeper Ironroot surge beneath him.

Hungry.

It wanted to consume the entity.

Absorb it.

Learn from it.

"No," Kael whispered.

The abyss ignored him.

The roots tightened harder.

The entity's body began cracking apart.

Vaelith's eyes widened.

"…Kael, stop!"

Too late.

The roots pierced directly into the entity's chest.

And suddenly—

Kael saw everything.

A flood of impossible information slammed into his mind.

Dead realities.

Erased species.

Worlds consumed by correction.

He saw the Devourer crossing endless dimensions like a cosmic plague, adapting to every law it encountered.

Nothing stopped it.

Nothing survived forever.

And then—

The entity saw him back.

Kael staggered violently.

The roots loosened for half a second.

The entity adapted instantly.

Its body destabilized—

Then split apart into three overlapping versions of itself.

Each existing in slightly different states of reality.

"Oh no," Soryn whispered.

The three entities moved simultaneously.

One attacked Valdrik.

One moved toward Astra and Ignivar.

One walked directly toward Kael.

Dren roared and swung his cleaver.

The blade connected—

Then partially vanished mid-swing.

Dren barely avoided losing his arm as reality distorted around the weapon.

Valdrik slammed his hammer into the ground instead of the entity itself.

Lightning erupted through the fractured plaza.

This time the attack worked partially.

The entity staggered slightly.

"It can still be affected indirectly!" Valdrik shouted.

Vaelith immediately understood.

"Don't attack the entities—attack the environment around them!"

Astra created a burst of heat beneath one entity's feet instead of targeting it directly.

The stone exploded upward.

The entity staggered again.

Kael watched all of it silently.

But part of him barely cared anymore.

Because deeper beneath the city—

The abyss had become excited.

It had tasted correction.

And now it wanted more.

The whispers inside Kael's mind intensified violently.

Consume them.

Open the depth.

Feed.

Kael grabbed his head painfully.

"No…"

The roots around him pulsed harder.

Liora ran toward him desperately.

"Kael, stay with us!"

He looked at her.

And for one horrible second—

He didn't recognize her.

The realization hit him like a blade.

The deeper Ironroot was stripping away his humanity piece by piece.

Not by force.

By replacing it with perspective too vast for human emotion to survive.

Above them—

The fracture widened further.

And something enormous moved behind it.

Much larger than the entities descending below.

Vaelith's face drained of color.

"…That's not another construct."

The thing behind the fracture shifted slowly.

And entire sections of sky folded inward around its outline.

Kael felt cold horror crawl through him.

Because the abyss beneath Ardrath reacted immediately.

Not with hunger this time.

With recognition.

The deeper roots across the city surged violently upward.

Buildings collapsed everywhere as abyssal tendrils erupted through entire districts.

People screamed in the distance.

The war was escalating again.

And Kael suddenly understood why.

The smaller entities had never been the invasion.

They were scouts.

The real descent was only beginning.

The massive shape behind the fracture pushed closer toward reality.

One enormous hand emerged slowly through the opening.

Not like the first hand.

Bigger.

Heavier.

Covered in shifting white fractures glowing against endless darkness.

The pressure alone brought everyone in the plaza to their knees.

Everyone except Kael.

The abyss beneath him pulsed violently.

Eagerly.

And then—

The colossal hand reached downward toward the city.

Kael looked upward silently.

The roots around him trembled.

Hungry.

Afraid.

Excited.

And deep inside himself—

Kael realized something horrifying.

The deeper Ironroot did not merely want to survive this war.

It wanted to win.

No matter what existence became afterward.
