Chapter 179 - The World Below

IRONROOT — Chapter 178: The World Below

The voice did not echo.

It settled.

Across the ruined streets of Ardrath, through shattered towers and broken Veins buried beneath the earth, the words remained suspended like hooks driven into reality itself.

CORRECTION REQUIRES TOTAL ERASURE.

And beneath the world—

The abyss answered.

THEN COME BELOW.

The collision between those two presences shook existence.

Not merely the city.

Not merely the continent.

The world itself trembled.

Far beyond Ardrath's horizon, oceans convulsed beneath blackened skies. Mountains groaned under invisible pressure. Entire forests dimmed as if life itself had briefly forgotten how to breathe.

Kael felt all of it.

Every fracture.

Every pulse.

Every terrified heartbeat.

The deeper Ironroot had expanded his senses beyond what any human mind was meant to withstand.

He no longer felt people.

He felt structure.

And the structure of the world was beginning to collapse.

Kael stood at the edge of the abyssal fissure, blackened roots spiraling around his body like living armor forged from buried nightmares. The marks crawling across his skin had spread over one side of his throat now, pulsing faintly beneath the surface.

Hungry.

Always hungry.

Above him, the Devourer's massive hand remained suspended against the sky, restrained by enormous abyssal roots wrapped around its shifting form.

But the roots were vanishing.

Slowly.

Every second the Devourer adapted further.

Every second the abyss retaliated harder.

And Kael stood trapped between them like a chain pulled in opposite directions by gods.

Liora stepped toward him despite the pressure distorting the air around the fissure.

"Kael," she whispered carefully.

He turned slightly.

And her chest tightened painfully.

His eyes looked older now.

Not physically.

Existentially.

Like he had witnessed truths no living mind was supposed to survive.

"You can still fight this," she said softly.

Kael stared at her in silence.

Then he asked quietly—

"…Fight what?"

Nobody answered.

Because he sounded sincere.

Not corrupted.

Not cruel.

Confused.

Vaelith stepped forward slowly, pale eyes locked on the roots moving beneath Kael's skin.

"The deeper layer is altering his perception."

Dren tightened his grip around his cleaver.

"Then pull him out."

"You don't understand," Vaelith replied.

His voice had lost its usual certainty.

"It's not controlling him."

A pause.

"It's changing what reality means to him."

The abyss pulsed beneath the city.

Kael winced sharply.

Immediately, the roots binding the Devourer's hand tightened harder in response.

Several nearby buildings collapsed from the pressure alone.

The hand above shifted slightly.

Reality folded around its fingers.

And suddenly—

The sky disappeared.

Not darkened.

Gone.

Everyone froze.

Above Ardrath now stretched an endless black void filled with drifting fragments of dead realities. Broken worlds floated beyond the fracture like corpses abandoned in a cosmic sea.

Astra staggered backward.

"…What are we seeing?"

"No one knows," Soryn whispered.

Even Vaelith looked shaken.

Because the Devourer was no longer entering reality.

Reality was beginning to resemble the Devourer.

Kael stared upward.

And deep inside him—

The abyss responded.

Not with fear.

Not with rage.

Recognition.

The roots around his body surged violently upward.

Hungry.

Kael clenched his fists.

"Stop."

The roots ignored him.

They lashed harder against the Devourer's hand, attempting to drag it downward into the abyssal fissure beneath Ardrath.

The city shook violently.

Liora reached toward him instinctively.

The moment her fingers touched his arm—

She saw it.

Depth.

An endless underground realm stretching beneath existence itself.

Not stone.

Not earth.

Roots.

Millions of colossal black roots extending through darkness without end.

And wrapped around them—

Worlds.

Dead civilizations fused into the abyss like rotting fruit trapped inside ancient vines.

Liora gasped and stumbled backward instantly.

Kael caught her before she hit the ground.

The moment he touched her—

Something human flickered back into his eyes.

"Liora?"

Her breathing shook violently.

"That thing beneath the world…"

She stared at him with horror.

"…it's alive."

Kael already knew.

That was the problem.

The abyss beneath Ardrath was not a source of power.

It was an entity.

Ancient.

Buried.

Starving.

And suddenly Kael understood the horrifying truth.

The Ironroot had never belonged to humanity.

Humanity had belonged to it.

Every Crown bearer.

Every sacrifice.

Every Vein connected to the network.

All of it had fed the deeper layer sleeping beneath existence.

The abyss pulsed proudly at the realization.

Kael's stomach twisted.

"No…"

The whispers inside his mind intensified immediately.

Feed.

Rise.

Open the depth.

Kael staggered backward.

For the first time since touching the deeper Ironroot—

He felt genuine fear toward it.

Above them, the Devourer adapted again.

The massive hand destabilized into overlapping layers of itself.

One existed.

One flickered.

One partially vanished into another reality entirely.

The roots attempting to bind it no longer knew which layer was real.

Entire sections of the abyssal bindings slipped apart instantly.

Vaelith's expression darkened.

"It separated its existence states."

Ignivar frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," Vaelith answered grimly, "part of it now exists somewhere even the deeper roots cannot fully reach."

Kael looked upward sharply.

The Devourer was evolving faster now.

Much faster.

Because the abyss had revealed itself.

The hand resumed descending slowly toward the city.

Every inch closer caused reality to warp further.

Streets folded unnaturally.

Buildings stretched into impossible shapes before collapsing inward.

Screams echoed from distant districts.

Ardrath was dying.

And Kael heard every single voice.

The deeper Ironroot forced him to.

Every fear.

Every prayer.

Every final thought.

And beneath all of it—

The abyss hungered.

Liora grabbed him again desperately.

"You have to stop using it!"

Kael looked at her helplessly.

"If I stop…"

His gaze shifted upward toward the descending hand.

"…nothing slows it anymore."

Valdrik stepped beside them.

"Then we fight together."

"You can't," Kael replied instantly.

Absolute certainty filled his voice.

"The Devourer already adapted to manifested force."

Astra's jaw tightened.

"So what? We surrender?"

Kael remained silent.

Because part of him already understood something the others did not.

This war had moved beyond heroes.

Beyond armies.

Beyond worlds.

The things staring at each other now were ancient systems older than creation itself.

And humanity was trapped between them like dust caught inside collapsing stars.

The construct near Kael suddenly rose from its kneeling position.

Everyone tensed immediately.

But it did not attack.

Instead, it turned slowly toward the abyssal fissure beneath Ardrath.

Then it spoke.

Its voice sounded fractured, hollow, incomplete.

Like reality itself struggled to produce the sound.

"DEEP EXISTENCE CONFIRMED."

The abyss pulsed below.

"PRIMARY CORRECTION PRIORITY UPDATED."

Vaelith's eyes widened in horror.

"No…"

The construct turned back toward the fracture.

And the Devourer's attention shifted completely.

Away from humanity.

Away from Ardrath.

Toward the abyss beneath the world.

Kael felt cold terror crawl through him.

The Devourer had identified the deeper Ironroot as the true threat.

Not mankind.

Not the Veins.

The abyss itself.

The fracture widened further.

This time, multiple shapes moved behind it.

Not one construct.

Not one hand.

An army.

Dark silhouettes gathering beyond reality itself.

Soryn's face went pale.

"…There are more."

"There were always more," Vaelith whispered.

The abyss reacted violently.

The fissure beneath Ardrath exploded wider.

Massive black roots erupted across the city, tearing through buildings and streets alike. Entire districts vanished beneath twisting abyssal growths.

People screamed in the distance as the deeper Ironroot surfaced everywhere at once.

Hungry.

Kael grabbed his head violently.

The whispers became unbearable.

Feed.

Rise.

Consume the correction.

His breathing broke apart.

"No…"

The roots ignored him.

They surged harder toward the sky.

And suddenly—

Kael realized the final truth.

The abyss did not care about saving existence.

It wanted war.

Because war fed it.

Every clash.

Every death.

Every ruined world.

Nourishment.

Liora saw the realization break across his face.

"What is it?"

Kael lowered his trembling hands slowly.

His eyes shook for the first time in many chapters.

"We were wrong."

The city trembled again.

"The Ironroot was never protecting the world."

Above them, the Devourer's army began descending through the fracture.

Below them, the abyssal roots surged upward to meet it.

And Kael stood between two cosmic horrors that had finally recognized each other.

Not as enemies.

As rivals.

The true war for reality had only just begun.

And humanity was no longer the center of it.

Merely trapped in the middle.
