Chapter 156 - The Veilwalker

IRONROOT — Chapter 155: The Veilwalker

Night settled over Ardrath, but it was not the peaceful darkness the city once knew.

The sky above the broken skyline twisted with slow-moving storm clouds, remnants of Valdrik Stormborn's presence. Lightning rolled quietly through the distant clouds, illuminating the jagged iron structures that had risen across the city since Kael awakened the full authority of the Ironroot Veins.

From above, Ardrath no longer looked like a city.

It looked like a fortress grown from metal bones.

And yet, even with that strength—

The air carried unease.

The battle with Velkar the Null King had left something behind.

Not destruction.

Not corruption.

But absence.

Entire sections of the Vein network had gone silent during the warlord's presence. Though the Ironroot system was slowly reconnecting, Kael could still feel the scars running through the foundation of the city.

Like nerves that had been severed and were only just beginning to regrow.

Kael stood alone at the top of the City Heart, looking down at the iron-lit streets below.

The Hollow Crown pulsed slowly on his brow.

It was heavier now.

Every warlord that appeared seemed to deepen its connection to him.

And that connection came with whispers.

Fragments of old rulers.

Echoes of ancient battles.

Memories that were not his.

Liora approached quietly, her silver aura faintly illuminating the dark stone around them.

"You haven't rested."

Kael didn't turn.

"Neither have the Veins."

She looked out over the city beside him.

"They're afraid."

Kael frowned slightly.

"The Veins don't feel fear."

Liora shook her head.

"No."

Her voice softened.

"But they feel what lives inside the world."

She hesitated.

"And right now… something is waking."

Before Kael could respond—

The air changed.

Not violently.

Not suddenly.

But subtly.

The wind across the balcony simply… stopped.

Liora noticed it immediately.

"So did Kael.

Below them, the city continued moving. Soldiers repaired damaged structures, Ironroot constructs carried stone through the streets, and small fires burned in scattered districts.

But around the City Heart itself—

The world had gone still.

Kael's chains stirred instinctively.

"Something's here."

Liora's silver aura brightened.

"Yes."

But she sounded confused.

"It's not hostile."

A quiet voice suddenly spoke behind them.

"That depends on perspective."

Kael turned instantly.

Standing a few steps behind them—

Was a man.

No lightning.

No flames.

No dramatic arrival.

He was simply… there.

Tall, slender, wearing layered dark robes etched with faint glowing symbols that shifted constantly like living script.

Floating slowly around him were small fragments of glass-like light, each piece reflecting a different image of the sky.

His eyes glowed faintly violet.

Kael's chains tightened.

"You slipped past the Veins."

The stranger smiled slightly.

"They tried to stop me."

He lifted one hand casually.

"They failed."

Liora studied him carefully.

"You're not a warlord."

The man chuckled softly.

"No."

"I'm the opposite."

Kael folded his arms.

"Then start talking."

The stranger bowed slightly.

"My name is Caelum Veyr."

"Some worlds call me the Veilwalker."

Arcanis appeared on the balcony instantly.

A flash of blue light erupted behind Kael as the archmage stepped through a small portal.

His eyes widened when he saw the stranger.

"…Impossible."

Caelum looked amused.

"Hello, Arcanis."

The archmage tightened his grip on his staff.

"You're supposed to be lost between dimensions."

Caelum shrugged lightly.

"I was."

Seraphine suddenly floated up from below, crimson energy trailing behind her.

"Oh good."

"Another mysterious one."

Valdrik and Dren followed shortly after, climbing the iron staircase that led to the balcony.

Within seconds, the entire gathering of champions stood around the stranger.

Caelum looked at each of them calmly.

"The storm heir."

He nodded toward Valdrik.

"The chaos bearer."

A glance toward Seraphine.

"The ember tyrant."

Ignivar had joined silently behind them.

"And the Ironroot."

His eyes returned to Kael.

"Quite the collection."

Dren pointed his cleaver at him.

"Alright Veilwalker."

"You walked into our city without permission."

"So talk."

Caelum's expression grew slightly more serious.

"I came because the Devourer is closer than any of you realize."

Silence followed.

Even Ignivar's flames flickered.

Kael spoke first.

"How close?"

Caelum raised one hand.

A floating shard of glass drifted toward the center of the group.

Inside the shard—

The stars could be seen.

But they were moving.

Not drifting.

Not rotating.

Moving.

Something enormous shifted among them.

Something so large that entire constellations bent around its shape.

Dren swallowed.

"…That's not a planet."

Caelum shook his head.

"No."

Seraphine's smile faded.

"That's the Devourer."

Caelum nodded.

"Yes."

Valdrik gripped his hammer.

"And it's coming here."

"Correct."

Arcanis stepped forward slowly.

"You can see across dimensions."

"Yes."

"And you came to warn us."

"Yes."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"Why?"

Caelum looked directly at him.

"Because you are the only world that might survive it."

Seraphine blinked.

"That's… comforting."

Caelum continued calmly.

"The Devourer has erased twelve civilizations."

"Twelve worlds with power far greater than yours."

Arcanis looked grim.

"And we're next."

Caelum nodded.

"Yes."

Valdrik stepped forward.

"Then help us stop it."

Caelum smiled slightly.

"I intend to."

Ignivar's deep voice echoed behind them.

"You are powerful."

"But you are not a god."

Caelum shook his head.

"No."

"But I know where the Devourer's weakness lies."

Every eye turned toward him.

Kael spoke slowly.

"You're saying it can be killed."

Caelum nodded.

"Yes."

"But not yet."

The Hollow Crown pulsed violently.

Kael felt the Veins surge beneath the city.

"What do we need?"

Caelum looked toward the distant mountains.

"Five warlords."

"Five champions."

"And something older than both."

Arcanis frowned.

"What?"

Caelum looked back at Kael.

"The Heart of Creation."

Silence fell again.

Even Ignivar looked surprised.

Seraphine tilted her head.

"That sounds important."

Caelum nodded.

"It is the only force capable of destroying something that devours entire worlds."

Dren groaned.

"Let me guess."

"We have to find it."

Caelum smiled.

"Yes."

Suddenly—

The Veins beneath the city screamed.

A violent pulse shot through the Ironroot network.

Kael grabbed the edge of the balcony.

"What was that?!"

Arcanis lifted his staff quickly.

His runes flared.

"…Another warlord."

Ignivar's flames roared to life.

"Yes."

But his voice carried something darker now.

"The third one."

The horizon to the south exploded with crimson light.

Something massive was rising from beneath the desert far beyond Ardrath.

Seraphine grinned slowly.

"Oh good."

Valdrik lifted his hammer.

Lightning cracked across the sky again.

Kael's chains erupted around him.

"Then we move."

Caelum stepped beside him calmly.

"Good."

The Veilwalker's eyes glowed brighter.

"Because the next warlord…"

The crimson light in the distance intensified.

"…doesn't negotiate."

Far beyond the desert—

A colossal shape began to emerge from the sand.

And the war for the world had just taken another step toward its final battle.
