Chapter 155 - The Warlord of Silence

IRONROOT — Chapter 154: The Warlord of Silence

The storm Valdrik brought with him did not leave.

It lingered above Ardrath, circling the sky like a restless guardian. Low thunder rolled through the clouds every few minutes, like the distant growl of something waiting to strike.

The city below was still broken.

But now it was alive.

Iron structures rose from the fractured streets like the bones of a reborn kingdom. The Ironroot Veins pulsed steadily beneath them, carrying Kael's authority through the entire foundation of Ardrath.

Yet despite the strength of the Veins—

Something deeper had begun to move.

Kael felt it every time he touched the Hollow Crown.

The network whispered warnings.

Liora stood beside him on the highest balcony of the City Heart, her silver aura glowing faintly as she studied the horizon.

"You feel it too," she said quietly.

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

The Veins were uneasy.

Not afraid.

But alert.

And that meant something powerful had entered the world.

Behind them, the newly gathered champions were preparing.

Valdrik Stormborn stood near the edge of the plaza, his warhammer resting against one shoulder as lightning occasionally crawled across the metal surface. The storm above him responded to his breathing, rumbling softly like a living beast.

Nearby, Seraphine floated lazily in the air, her crimson energy swirling around her fingers as she toyed with small fragments of chaos fire.

Dren sat on the broken steps of an iron tower sharpening his cleaver.

Arcanis walked slow circles around the plaza, drawing glowing runes across the air as he studied the Vein network.

And standing apart from them all—

Ignivar.

The Ember Tyrant stood perfectly still, staring toward the eastern mountains.

He had not moved for nearly an hour.

Kael approached him.

"You see something."

Ignivar did not look away from the horizon.

"Yes."

Kael folded his arms.

"Another warlord."

Ignivar nodded slowly.

"The second of the five."

Seraphine floated closer instantly.

"Oh good."

"I was getting bored."

Valdrik glanced toward the mountains.

The storm clouds above him darkened slightly.

"What kind of warlord?"

Ignivar's answer was simple.

"The quiet kind."

Dren frowned.

"That doesn't sound threatening."

Ignivar finally turned toward them.

His burning eyes flickered slightly.

"It should."

The Veins beneath the city suddenly pulsed.

Hard.

Once.

Then again.

Arcanis froze.

"That's not normal."

Kael's chains twitched instinctively.

"What is it?"

Arcanis turned toward the eastern mountains.

"The Veins are disappearing."

Liora blinked.

"Disappearing?"

"Yes."

Arcanis' voice dropped.

"Entire sections of the Ironroot network are going silent."

Kael immediately connected to the Veins through the Hollow Crown.

What he felt made his blood run cold.

The network wasn't breaking.

It wasn't being destroyed.

It was being cut off.

Cleanly.

Silently.

Like someone slicing nerves from a living body.

Ignivar's voice came low and heavy.

"He's here."

The ground trembled.

Not from impact.

But from absence.

A strange hollow sensation rippled beneath the city.

As if something was erasing the Veins themselves.

Then—

The eastern wall of Ardrath exploded inward.

Stone shattered.

Iron pillars bent like fragile bones.

And from the dust walked a figure dressed entirely in black armor.

No flames.

No lightning.

No glowing energy.

Just darkness.

His armor absorbed the light around him.

Even the dust in the air seemed to vanish near his body.

In his hand he carried a long blade made of something darker than steel.

The man stepped calmly into the ruined plaza.

Every Vein near him went silent.

Kael felt the Hollow Crown recoil in his mind.

"…Who is that?"

Ignivar answered quietly.

"Velkar the Null King."

Seraphine blinked.

"Null?"

Arcanis' voice tightened.

"That means—"

Ignivar finished the sentence.

"He erases power."

Velkar stopped walking.

His hollow black visor slowly turned toward Kael.

Then he spoke.

His voice sounded wrong.

Flat.

Empty.

Like sound echoing inside a dead cavern.

"So."

"You are the Ironroot."

Kael stepped forward slowly.

"And you're the one cutting my Veins."

Velkar tilted his head slightly.

"They are… inefficient."

He raised his blade.

The air around the weapon folded inward slightly.

Arcanis' eyes widened.

"That weapon is devouring energy."

Ignivar nodded.

"The Null Blade."

Velkar pointed the weapon toward the City Heart.

"I have come to silence this world."

Seraphine cracked her knuckles.

"Oh I really don't like him."

Dren stood up.

"Good."

Valdrik lifted his hammer.

Thunder rolled across the sky.

Velkar looked at the storm clouds.

Then he lifted one finger.

The thunder stopped.

Instantly.

The sky went silent.

Valdrik's eyes widened.

"That's… not possible."

Velkar lowered his hand.

"It is."

He moved.

No flash.

No dramatic leap.

Just one step.

Suddenly he was standing directly in front of Valdrik.

His blade swung once.

Valdrik barely blocked the strike with his hammer.

The impact made no sound.

But the lightning inside the hammer vanished instantly.

Valdrik staggered backward.

"My power—!"

Gone.

Seraphine attacked next.

A wave of crimson chaos fire erupted toward Velkar.

The flames touched him.

Then vanished.

Like they had never existed.

Seraphine's smile faded slightly.

"…Okay that's creepy."

Velkar continued walking.

Every step erased more of the Veins beneath the plaza.

Kael stepped forward.

The Hollow Crown flared violently.

Iron chains exploded from the ground, wrapping around Velkar's body.

For a moment—

They held.

Then Velkar's blade moved once.

Every chain dissolved into dust.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"You erase energy."

Velkar nodded slightly.

"Yes."

"And the Devourer requires silence."

The name made the air grow colder.

Velkar raised his blade again.

"This world screams with power."

The weapon pointed toward Kael's chest.

"I will quiet it."

Kael's chains erupted again—

But this time they came from everywhere.

Walls.

Streets.

Towers.

The entire Ironroot network surged forward.

Hundreds of chains slammed into Velkar from every direction.

For the first time—

Velkar stopped moving.

His blade carved through chain after chain.

But the numbers kept growing.

Arcanis raised his staff.

Arcane symbols reinforced the iron.

Valdrik roared as lightning returned to the storm above.

Seraphine unleashed another wave of chaos fire.

Dren charged straight at Velkar with his cleaver.

The plaza exploded into battle.

Velkar fought silently.

No shouting.

No anger.

Just precise movements.

Each swing of the Null Blade erased power.

Lightning disappeared.

Chaos flames vanished.

Arcane spells collapsed.

Even the Veins struggled to reach him.

Yet despite that—

The heroes kept coming.

And for the first time—

Velkar was pushed back.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Ignivar stepped forward at last.

His volcanic hammer ignited.

Flames erupted across the plaza.

Velkar's visor turned toward him.

"Ember Tyrant."

Ignivar swung the hammer.

The impact detonated like a volcano.

Fire and molten stone exploded across the plaza.

Velkar skidded backward several meters.

The Null Blade flickered slightly.

Ignivar's voice thundered.

"You are not the silence this world fears."

Velkar slowly straightened.

For the first time—

He looked directly at Kael.

"You are stronger than expected."

He lifted the Null Blade.

"But the Devourer is patient."

The weapon cut the air.

A black portal opened behind him.

Velkar stepped into the darkness.

Before disappearing—

He spoke one final sentence.

"Four warlords remain."

Then he was gone.

The portal collapsed.

The Veins slowly returned.

The storm resumed above the city.

The plaza fell silent.

Dren exhaled slowly.

"…I really hate these warlords."

Seraphine rubbed her arms.

"Yeah that one was disturbing."

Valdrik stared at his hammer.

"He erased lightning."

Arcanis turned toward Kael.

"That was only the second warlord."

Ignivar looked toward the distant stars.

"Yes."

His voice turned grim.

"And the third is far worse."

Far above the world—

Something enormous shifted again in the darkness between stars.

The Devourer.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

And slowly—

drawing closer to the world that dared awaken its champions.

The war had truly begun.
