The request arrived early.
A guild messenger knocked on the door still in the morning. There was no alarm in the tone, but the urgency was clear. An official convoy carrying documents and strategic resources for the city had been intercepted on the northern road. It wasn't a common caravan. It was institutional transport.
"Direct request for your group," the messenger said.
I accepted without hesitation.
Protection was nothing new for us. But there was something different in this request. It wasn't just escort. It was a rapid response to an unexpected attack.
We set out immediately.
The northern road was more open than common trade routes. Wide fields, few elevations, extensive visibility. Ideal for long-range ambushes.
As we walked, Liriel organized the formation mentally.
"I'll stay in front with you."
Rai'kanna spun her sword on her shoulder.
"I'll cover direct advance."
Lyannis replied precisely.
"I can expand a containment field if there are multiple attackers."
Elara adjusted her bow.
"I'll take the high ground once we identify a good point."
Vespera maintained her usual serenity.
"Unstable magical flow detected three kilometers ahead."
It didn't take long.
When we reached the curve in the road, we saw the convoy stopped. Two closed carriages, three guards injured on the ground, and about eight armed men trying to force open one of the cargo boxes.
They weren't experienced adventurers.
But they were organized.
And armed.
As soon as we approached, one of them saw us.
"Fall back!" he shouted to the others.
Too late.
I advanced first.
No explosion of force. No spectacle.
Just direct presence.
Rai'kanna struck from the left, disarming two with quick and controlled movements. No lethal strikes. Just efficiency.
Liriel intercepted the group leader. He tried to react with a disordered strike. She deflected with minimal motion and brought him down with a superficial cut to the leg, enough to immobilize.
Elara was already positioned above a lateral elevation. Two arrows shot with precision hit the weapons in the hands of two other attackers, forcing them to drop them.
Lyannis activated a discreet circle under three men attempting to flee. The containment field closed around them, limiting movement without causing harm.
Vespera extended perception. One attacker tried to hide behind a carriage. She indicated the position with a slight gesture.
I reached him before he could react.
The confrontation lasted less than three minutes.
No chaos.
No unnecessary screams.
When the last man was immobilized, silence returned to the road.
The carriage guards looked at us with visible relief.
"You arrived quickly," one of them said, still leaning on the ground.
"We're here now," I replied.
Rai'kanna collected the attackers' weapons.
"Organized amateurs."
Lyannis quickly analyzed the symbols on their improvised uniforms.
"Opportunist group. Doesn't seem like part of a larger operation."
Vespera confirmed.
"I detect no reinforcements nearby."
Liriel checked the guards' injuries.
"Nothing fatal. They need attention, but are stable."
Elara descended from the elevation and walked to the carriage.
"What exactly are you transporting?"
The convoy leader hesitated for a second before answering.
"Official documents and refined energy crystals."
Lyannis furrowed her brow slightly.
"Refined crystals attract attention."
I observed the tied-up attackers.
They didn't have the stance of fanatics.
They had the stance of opportunists.
"Did you know what you were doing?" I asked the immobilized leader.
He avoided my gaze.
"Information leaked."
That phrase caught attention.
Liriel raised her face.
"Internal leak?"
He remained silent.
Vespera tilted her head slightly.
"The emotional pattern indicates fear, not ideological conviction."
Lyannis took a deep breath.
"That could be more relevant than it seems."
But at that moment, the priority was completing the mission.
We reorganized the convoy.
Rai'kanna and I took lateral positions. Liriel in front. Elara maintained elevated vigilance whenever possible. Lyannis prepared a detection field. Vespera expanded perception.
The return trip was smooth.
No new attack attempts.
When we reached the city gates, the guards thanked us formally.
"Without you, we would have lost everything."
I just nodded.
It wasn't about recognition.
It was about preventing loss.
At the guild, we handed over the attackers and the detailed report.
The clerk recorded it carefully.
"Interception resolved with total efficiency," she said.
Rai'kanna tilted her head slightly.
"It was simple."
But I knew it wasn't just simple.
It was automatic.
Coordinated.
Without the need for constant verbal commands.
We left the guild before noon.
Elara walked beside me.
"That was too fast."
"Because we are aligned," Liriel replied.
Lyannis agreed.
"Reduced response time. Clean execution."
Vespera spoke calmly.
"The group's operational trust is consolidated."
Rai'kanna smiled.
"They didn't even have a chance."
As we returned home, I thought about the phrase said by the attacker.
Information leaked.
It could have been coincidence.
Could have been internal carelessness.
Or could be the first sign of something bigger.
But I didn't mention it at that moment.
The mission had been completed.
Protection delivered.
No serious damage.
Upon arriving home, I realized something clear.
There was no tension before.
No excessive concern during.
And no need for recovery afterward.
It was as if we were already operating on a stable level, where unexpected situations didn't shake the structure.
We sat in the living room for a few minutes.
Rai'kanna rested her sword beside her.
"If this is the standard now, it's calm."
Lyannis shook her head.
"The standard can change."
Liriel looked at me.
"But if it changes, we face it."
Elara leaned against the sofa.
"Today proved that."
Vespera concluded.
"The cohesion remains intact."
Protection mission.
Simple on paper.
But revealing in execution.
We resolved it quickly.
Without strain.
Without doubt.
And as the afternoon passed quietly, I understood something essential.
If something bigger is forming beyond what we see, we are ready to respond.
Today we protected a convoy.
Tomorrow it could be something different.
But the foundation is solid.
And that makes all the difference.
