Stephanie POV.
The quiet in the living room was a living thing. It was soft, not the hard quiet from the car. The kids were asleep upstairs, their laughter still seemed to hang in the air. The movie's happy ending had wrapped around us like the blanket on our laps. I felt calm. The last of my anger at Tiffany had melted away, warmed out of me by my family.
Cane shifted beside me on the couch. He took a deep breath. I could feel him gathering his thoughts. The easy comfort of a minute ago shifted. Something was coming.
"Steph," he began, his voice low. "There's more. About the company. The drugs. The whole thing."
I turned my head to look at him. His face was serious, looking straight ahead at the dark television screen.
"I need you to know… I had no idea about any of it. Not the pharmaceutical company, not the experiments. Not until your mother came to me."
