Chapter 75 - The Final Moment

Four minutes until Penny's predicted explosion of the Super Collider—

"Damn it!" Peter cursed. "Guys, we've gotta move—fast!"

As he spoke, he leapt high, both hands firing webs. With a single web-swing jump, he shot forward dozens of meters.

Behind him, Amazing Spider-Man B, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Ham all realized how bad the situation was.

No one wasted breath talking—they just followed.

According to Penny's earlier analysis, the Super Collider was now in a state of overload acceleration. Every passing second was squeezing the last bit of life out of its components.

It had already been overloaded for more than two hours—there were definitely malfunctions during that time. Octavia must have been manually stabilizing the machine, keeping it teetering on the edge of collapse without actually breaking.

But once the overload phase ended and the collider entered the collision stage, the massive burst of energy it would release would be the final straw that broke the camel's back.

If it were just a straw, maybe the camel could hold on—but this poor beast was already falling apart. Add even one more twig, and you knew exactly what would happen.

When that moment came, the collider would collapse and explode. The tremendous energy gathered within it would create a massive pseudo–black hole—one that would instantly devour Brooklyn, and possibly all of New York.

In an instant.

It would take only a single instant.

They had to insert the overload key before that happened—to reverse the program.

Even then, there would still be an explosion—but that was a far better outcome than watching the whole city swallowed by a black hole.

"Damn it, I should've let Gwen deliver the overload key to Penny earlier," Peter thought bitterly.

They'd assumed they still had twenty whole minutes left—plenty of time. So they decided to finish cleaning things up first.

But now, they could only blame themselves for being overconfident.

Who could have imagined that Octavia would act so decisively?

Even in defeat, she had been planning her escape—while making this desperate, irreversible choice.

A woman's resolve, sometimes, is sharper than any man's.

Not only toward others—but toward herself.

The underground base was enormous, but fortunately, Penny and Noir Spider-Man had already mapped it out during their time here.

Penny sent Peter a route diagram, charting the shortest path to the collider's main control panel—the place where the overload key 2.0 needed to be inserted.

The one small stroke of luck was that Octavia had dismissed everyone except herself and Jonathan—including Kingpin's men.

That probably explained why Peter and the others had been left alone in Kingpin's office for nearly two hours.

And now, without interference, they could move freely through the base.

Even so, it took the four of them nearly three full minutes to make it through.

One minute until the Super Collider's predicted explosion—

The first thing they saw was blinding light.

That light came from the collider's super-magnetic conduit—the glow of high-energy particle streams already accelerated to near-light speed.

Then came the roar—so loud it seemed to echo directly inside their skulls.

Underneath it, faintly, came the grinding of overstrained machinery, groaning like it knew it was about to die.

This whole place had become a bomb.

A colossal bomb.

More terrifying than any nuclear warhead.

"Over here!"

From atop a steel platform, the Spider-Mech and Noir Spider-Man leapt down.

Penny was already seated inside the Spider-Mech.

She grabbed Peter with one hand and launched upward in a single bound.

50 seconds.

"I knew you'd come! But—it's too late!"

Thud!

A panel burst open, and several white, fluid-like mechanical tentacles shot out from within.

"Peter—now!" Penny's voice shouted from the mech.

Then, with a violent jolt, the Spider-Mech hurled Peter forward—hard.

And as Peter flew, the mech fired a webline, swinging downward to tackle Octavia directly, dragging her out of the air.

40 seconds.

Peter landed beside the main control panel. Flashbacks flickered through his mind—fragments of memory.

Not long ago, Blonde Peter had been here too.

But before he could insert the overload key, he'd been ambushed—first by the Prowler, then by the Green Goblin, even together.

Then Miles had stumbled in by accident, and that mission had ended with the death of the blonde Spider-Man.

30 seconds.

Peter shook off the memories and tapped the metal floor beneath him.

Every panel looked identical—without clues, finding the right one would've been nearly impossible.

Luckily, those memory fragments held the answer.

That saved precious time.

20 seconds.

"Got it!"

After testing a few spots, Peter finally felt the right vibration.

He pressed his hand against the metal, channeling his bio-electric charge to the limit—then yanked hard.

Nothing moved.

"Hahaha! Spider—did you really think I wouldn't reinforce it, knowing you'd come?"

Octavia's manic laughter echoed from below.

"Damn it!" Peter swore, slamming his fist into a nearby panel, trying to dent it open.

But it didn't budge.

Was this it?

Was everyone going to die here?

Doubt flickered through his eyes.

15 seconds.

Spider-Ham bounced up beside him.

His tiny pig hooves glowed brilliantly, as if charged with cartoon magic. "Time for my Ultimate Finishing Punch!"

DUANG!

A thunderous crack echoed through the room.

One of the reinforced alloy panels near the control core caved inward—completely crushed.

This metal was designed to withstand direct bombardment from high-energy particle streams—

—and it had just been flattened.

Utterly flattened.

"What are you waiting for? My hoof's about to swell up like a balloon! Give it the final blow!" Spider-Ham yelled.

10 seconds.

Spider-Gwen, Noir Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man B, Spider-Mech Girl Penny, Spider-Ham—and… Miles?

Together with Peter, seven Spider-People in total pressed their hands against the cracked panel and pulled with everything they had.

"Three!"

"Two!"

"One!"

"Pull!"

BOOM!

Hundreds of tons of combined strength tore through the reinforced barrier. Even with Octavia's modifications, the alloy couldn't withstand that much power.

It gave way—snapping open.

5 seconds.

Peter yanked out the Overload Key 2.0—and jammed it in!

The emergency override activated instantly. Within the collider's systems, a single bug derailed the perfect sequence of the acceleration loop.

"No—!"

Below, Octavia—pinned by Penny at the collider's particle vent—let out a scream of despair as she saw it happen.
