Chapter 74 - The Sudden Change

He remembered that Kingpin and his men had shown up at around six in the morning.

The battle had lasted about half an hour — meaning that by roughly 6:30, Kingpin's forces were defeated and Doctor Octopus had escaped.

After that, they had immediately set off for Fisk Tower. From Queens to Brooklyn took about an hour's drive, so around 7:30 a.m., Peter, Amazing Spider-Man B, and Spider-Gwen arrived at the tower.

Doctor Octopus likely reached it around the same time. There hadn't been any traffic, and the roads between were mostly straight.

By around 8:00, Peter and Gwen had disarmed the traps in Kingpin's office and begun collecting data.

At about 8:50, Spider-Ham, Peni, and Spider-Noir arrived. Peni and Noir then split off, heading underground.

By 9:00, most of the data had been collected.

And now, it was 9:20 — Peni and the others had found the particle collider and discovered the problem.

That meant the collider had been activated around 7:30. Considering that its current output was running at four times the planned power, the collision event would occur around 10:00.

Factoring in possible interference from Doctor Octopus and Kingpin's men stationed near the collider, they needed to leave themselves ten to twenty minutes of margin.

In other words — by 9:40, they had to finish processing the data!

Peter quickly pieced the logic together.

While continuing to scan the files, he relayed his deductions to the others over the communicator.

He glanced at the clock and said, "By nine-thirty — no later than nine-thirty — I'll have everything scanned."

Peni and Noir agreed to stay hidden for now, observing the situation below until the others regrouped with them.

Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham, meanwhile, were tasked with finding a way down to the underground lab.

Ten minutes later—

Peter clapped his hands and stood up sharply.

"Done!" he shouted, excitement overflowing from his voice.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be something to cheer about.

But when it was tied to a crisis that could endanger eight million lives, that sense of triumph hit differently.

Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham had also found a passage to the lower levels.

It wasn't hard to locate — it was right inside Kingpin's office.

A private elevator.

This elevator only went to three places: the office itself, the rooftop helipad, and the underground particle collider lab.

Peter packaged the scanned data and sent it to Peni. Peni, using her SP//dr mech's advanced tech, disguised her system signature as that of a "concerned civilian," then mass-sent the files to the contacts Peter had provided.

Once that was done, the Amazing Spider-Man B drove Kingpin's stretched Lincoln to the building's front entrance, reinforced Kingpin's webbed-up body with a few extra strands of spider silk, and returned upstairs.

When everyone regrouped, there was no need for words — they stepped straight into the elevator and began their descent.

The time was 9:35.

The elevator shot downward at high speed.

Just as the doors slid shut, Peter and the others thought they heard Peni cry out in alarm from above — but they couldn't tell what had happened.

Meanwhile, in the underground collider lab—

Where once the place had been bustling with scientists, now only two people remained.

One was Doctor Octopus. The other, a man in a white lab coat.

"Jonathan, you shouldn't be here," said Doctor Octopus. Her hands and four mechanical arms all moved at once — one person working with the speed of five, frantically manipulating the consoles.

Her hair was disheveled, her face and clothes streaked with dust.

She had fled here directly after the battle with the Spider-Men, without even pausing to rest — devoting herself entirely to the collider.

She'd seen the power of the Spider-Men and knew they would inevitably come for the collider. And she knew her own strength alone wasn't enough to stop them.

So — she'd made her choice. If she couldn't keep it, she would destroy it.

But before that, she would finish her final experiment.

And in truth, while Peter's earlier deductions were mostly correct, there was one crucial discrepancy —A small difference that might prove fatal.

"No, Liv," said the man — Jonathan — shaking his head firmly. "This is your life's work. It's our life's work. I'm staying. I want to witness everything to the end."

Jonathan Ohnn — a man in his early forties. An MIT graduate with a doctorate in quantum physics. Recruited personally by Doctor Octopus to join the Alchemax Laboratory.

The collider's successful creation owed at least forty percent to him.

Fifty percent belonged to her — and the remaining ten percent, collectively, to everyone else.

If there was anyone in Alchemax besides Liv who was most devoted to the collider project, it was Jonathan.

(Well — Kingpin too, in his own way.)

But Kingpin's concern had never been the science. He only cared about the result — bringing his family back from another universe.

Quantum theory, parallel dimensions, multiverse physics — none of that mattered to him.

So when Doctor Octopus had rushed back and dismissed the rest of the team, Jonathan had chosen to stay.

He knew everything — what had happened, and what she intended to do.

And he wasn't afraid.

He wanted to stand by her side until the very end — to see the outcome with his own eyes.

"Whew…" Liv exhaled, wiping sweat from her brow. A faint smile curled at her lips.

It was done.She'd done it.

Even if the Spider-Men arrived now, it was too late.

The collider was entering its final overload acceleration. In five minutes, it would activate.

And in five minutes — everything would end.

"Five minutes! The collider will start in five minutes!"

That was the first thing Peter and the others heard as the elevator doors opened.

Peter, Amazing Spider-Man B, Gwen, and Spider-Ham all froze.

"Five minutes?!" Gwen blurted. "Wasn't it supposed to activate at ten o'clock?"

Peni's voice came through, tight and serious:"Clearly, Doctor Octopus started remote control protocols the moment she left Aunt May's house. That means when you arrived at Fisk Tower at 7:30, the collider had already been running for an hour!"

"So the overload acceleration window—nine hours total—is already a quarter complete. That's 135 minutes, or two hours and fifteen minutes!"

"In other words," Peter realized, eyes wide, "the collision event happens at nine forty-five!"

"Exactly," said Peni, firm and certain.

Peter's face drained of color. He looked down at his watch.

It was already 9:41.
