The day had barely started, and already my desk looked like a war zone. Schedules, client lists, messages from the board — and on top of that, the intern who could not seem to do anything right- or rather, was doing things perfectly.
Tracy.
She was polite, too polite, the kind that smiled even when you wanted to shake her. I did not hate her — not exactly. But something about her presence unsettled me.
At first, it was subtle. Ethan would ask for her opinion on reports. Then he started calling her into meetings he never used to. One afternoon, I caught him watching her through the glass wall, his gaze softer than I'd ever seen.
That is when it clicked.
It was not just professionalism.
And that terrified me, because Ethan Cole did not mix work with emotion. I'd worked beside him long enough to know that his attention was rare — precious even. And now, someone else had it.
