Eden's POV
The alarm clock is beeping really loud, a harsh, relentless sound that cuts through the last layers of my sleep. My eyes won't open all the way, everything is just blurry shapes and the soft grey light of early morning. I feel him before I see him. The weight dipping the mattress, then the warm press of his lips against my cheek, my forehead, a gentle, hurried kiss.
"I have to leave earlier than planned, baby. Emergency meeting," his voice is a low, sleep-rough murmur near my ear. "I'll be back tomorrow. We'll finish the treasure hunt then, I promise."
I manage a nod, my head heavy on the pillow, a soft sound of acknowledgment humming in my throat. I hear him move away, the quiet rustle of his jacket, the final click of his suitcase. Sleep tries to pull me back under, but I force myself to roll over and push up on my elbows, blinking until the room settles into focus. He's already gone from the bedroom.
