He got ready quickly today maybe because of excitement of today
Catherine had already prepared a car and some guards for him , with sole purpose of a visit to the city called velar , which used to be capital of Valdric Empire
He quickly got out of the nearest exit and outside was a old vintage style car parked for him and he quickly boarded it with his maid
The motorcar hummed softly as it glided through the streets
Reinhart leaned back in his seat, hands folded over his lap. This was not his first trip into the city — he had ventured out before, under strict supervision and carefully timed order just for his awakening. But today, he moved with freedom, the palace walls behind him and a world of shadowed streets ahead.
This city only appeared on game's mini map so he doesn't know it well , though the details now hit harder. Fifty years after the Valdric War, every corner of this city seemed etched with pain. Buildings leaned under the weight of neglect. The streets smelled of smoke, wet stone, and long-stored grief.
Old men shuffled along the sidewalks, their coats threadbare, their backs hunched. Some limped, hands still scarred from battles long ended. Once they were soldiers, patriots of the fallen empire; now they were beggars, muttering curses at the sky or at any noble who passed. Their eyes carried the weight of humiliation, the anger of decades unhealed.
Catherine sat quietly beside him, her gaze scanning faces as they passed. "Poor fellows " she said softly.
" war got over like five decades ago , so why is this city still like this ?" he asked Catherine
" My lord , most of the money goes into officials and local land lords pockets , we poor commoners only get leftovers " said Catherine
" Alright " reinhart said in a deep voice
...
The motorcar slowed at a busy street ,
There were many fruit and vegetable seller on the street , horse driven cart and beggars but reinhart caught sight of a shop board which he hasn't seen in a while
There was a board in a visible alley which read " GOAT TAVERN " , in the game , he personally named and established it
This tavern was just a cover for the headquarters of his spy agency that he himself established
And now it was a perfect chance for him to visit this tavern in real life and also to collect all the information about things happening in the dark in past five decades
...
The guard at the front got out of the vehicle in order to clear the route but i saw a opportunity in it
" Catherine , let's go " said reinhart in a authoritative voice said as he began opening the door himself
" But... My lord " said Catherine but still followed behind reinhart
" My lord , you can't go like this , please wait for us to accompany you " said the driver
" Nah , I am just going to that tavern in the front , there's nothing to worry about there and if you want you can join us too "
And then reinhart went inside the tavern , leaving the driver and his guard behind
His maid opened the door to the tavern and then he paused, taking in the tavern's facade: blackened timber, cracked windows, and the faint smell of smoke that never seemed to leave. A faded emblem — a raven in flight — hung above the doorway, paint flaking and chipped.
Inside, the tavern was warm and dim, the air thick with pipe smoke and the scent of old wood. Patrons hunched over mugs of cheap beer, faces lined with fifty years of hardship. Whispered conversations stopped briefly as Reinhart entered. the subtle attention a noble commanded remained and all eyes were drawn to him
He moved to a corner table, nodding to the bartender — a woman with graying hair and sharp eyes, who came to serve him immediately.
" Tell me lord what are you looking for today " she said, voice low, carrying a hint of respect and wariness.
" well I want you " Reinhart replied quietly.
But somehow everyone heard it and first stared quitely at reinhart and then at the old bartender
Everyone couldn't believe their ears , that a teenage kid would say a thing like that to a women old enough to be his grandma
The bartender leaned closer , their was a faint blush on her face and said . "Some things, my lord shouldn't be said like this "
Only then reinhart realised but it was already too late as if trying to refuse or explain will only make this matter worse
Behind Catherine looked at reinhart with shock in her eyes and she pinched herself to see whether she was dreaming or not
Reinhart maintained a face as straight as iron and said in a robotic voice " i want hot waifu " . He said in a low whisper which was inaudible to everyone
( in the game he set this line as a spy code which means " I want information" ).
The bartender face suddenly straighten up as well "alright my lord , please follow me to the backroom"
Around him, everyone face went again in shock seeing this , whisper spread about a noble heir wanting a old bartender, old enough to be his grandma
While amidst all this , Catherine was frozen like a rock , like her world suddenly collapsed and only one word echoed in her mind
" Is lord reinhart interested in older women ? "
...
The backroom was dimly lit, walls lined with various alcohol bottles , Reinhart settled into a chair
" Why did you come here , my lord ? "
"as I said , i wanted information " he asked.
" My lord , didn't anyone told you that we closed this department 30 years ago ? "
Said bartender
" What , with whose permission did you close it ? " Said reinhart in a shocked tone
" My lord , after the death of your grandfather we continued doing operation and eventually we met your father ,.asking him to take us under his wings but the first command he gave us was to dissolve this department, since then this has just been a normal tavern " said bartender in a sad tone
After hearing this , reinhart just sat quietly but inside his mind he cursed his virtual charcter son with everything he got , like hell who gave him permission to dissolve the spy department he made after grinding so hard .
But the only thing reinhart could do now was asking her about all the information she collected after empire collapse
The bartender nodded. "I've kept track of merchants, officials, displaced soldiers… all those who might be vital for the restoration of our empire but now that information is useless as most of them died of old age or are in their twilight years "
After hearing this reinhart no longer was in the mood to stay in this place any longer so he just bid farewell and left while muttering
" My disappointment is without measurement"
...
Outside the backroom
Catherine, still frozen, finally whispered upon seeing reinhart exit with a sad look on his face which was exactly opposite to the face with which he went in , "My lord… how was your visit ? " she asked in a worries and hesitant tone but still her face couldn't hide the blush
Reinhart shot her a glance, half-amused face "yep , it was most wonderful and meaningful visit of my life "
But to all other listeners , it meant something else
