My heart stuttered. I stumbled back, eyes wide with panic and fear.
He'd been with my father before. Maybe I was wrong to judge based on that, but I wasn't willing to take any chances. If Nico was doing business with him and saw me like this, he could drag me right back. Sure, he didn't look like someone who minded his business, and I'd be damned if I stayed to know that.

He stepped forward, hand outstretched. "Harper–"
"No!" I screeched, the sound slicing through the quiet night. "Don't come any closer!"
"I'm not—"
"I won't let you take me back to him!" I snapped.
I turned and bolted, but I didn't get far because strong arms locked tight around my waist, yanking me back. My heart leapt into my throat. Panic surged through my limbs.
I didn't think as my body moved on instinct. I drove my elbow hard into his gut.
