The moment she let out her frustration, her parents both stared at her face with wide shock as though a demon had just slapped them across their cheeks. For a moment Evangeline wished that there could be guilt, that there would be a moment for them to reflect but all she could see was horror, the horror of a person who felt as if something wasn't meant to be found out.
This struck to her as strange and it didn't help that her mother and father had immediately slammed the iron bars with their hands and stammered, "You... what... how did you find out about that!"
Evangeline felt a nauseating push in the depth of her stomach. She couldn't tell why she was feeling so but perhaps because she was close to the truth, the truth why her own family had shunned her so much, the truth of why she was hated.
