Evangeline looked up and met eyes with her family all at once. The only space separating them was the iron bars and the small path but for some reason Eva felt that the distance was even longer than that and perhaps what she felt wasn't just physical distance but the distance she felt the moment she realized that she was never a part of her own family.
Although she had asked where they were earlier, now looking at their faces, Evangeline didn't know what to say. She didn't know what else she could say knowing well that they also had nothing to speak to her.
"Where were you?!" Mr Crestmont yelled when their eyes met. "How dare you look at your father straight to his eyes!"
Mrs Crestmont didn't say anything but the humphed she let out spoke of just how she agreed with Mr Crestmont. Instead of explaining, they had demanded where they were, even admonishing her.
