I woke to chaos.
The sound pulled me from sleep before I could process what it was, screaming, but not the kind born from pain. This was fear, the sound of someone who'd woken to a world they didn't understand.
Raizel was already out of bed, pulling on clothes with urgent efficiency. "You can rest more," he said, but I was already moving, ignoring the protests from my still-exhausted body.
"What's happening?" I asked, reaching for my own clothes.
"I don't know," Raizel said, his hand going to the sword he kept by the door. "But that's coming from the lower levels."
The lower levels, where the underground chamber was, where I'd destroyed the barrier days ago.
We ran through the corridors together, following the sound of that terrible screaming, other guards and servants were moving in the same direction, all of us drawn toward the commotion like moths to flame.
