I rode hard for the first hour, putting as much distance between myself and the manor as possible, the mare was surprisingly strong for her size, carrying me steadily north even though I knew she couldn't maintain this pace forever.
Eventually I had to slow down, both for the horse's sake and because I needed to check Mari's map. I pulled the folded paper from my pocket and tried to read it in the moonlight.
The route she'd drawn was simple enough. Follow the main road north for two days until I reached a town called Millbrook, then take the western fork that led toward the mountain passes. From there it was another two days of travel to reach Ravenshollow, assuming the roads were clear and I didn't run into any trouble.
Four days. Four days of traveling alone through territory I'd never seen, with powers I couldn't control and pursuers who might be following.
The thought was terrifying, but thinking about Cadiz facing the empire alone was worse.
