I frowned, wiping a hand over my face. "What now?" I muttered.
I checked the screen. It was Joe.
My chest tightened. "Finally," I muttered, snatching it up.
"Alpha, What were…"
"Xavier," his voice cut through, rough and low, nearly drowned out by static and wind. "Listen to me. Don't ask questions. Just listen."
That tone, it wasn't his usual calm command. It was sharper, strained. My pulse quickened.
"What's going on? Are you okay?"
"No time," he hissed. I could hear movement, like footsteps crunching over gravel. "You need to make sure the northern border gates are open. Do you hear me? Open them. And make sure the guards stationed there don't stop or question anyone who comes through."
"Wait…" I tried to ask, but he was already speaking faster.
"Do it now. Don't you dare delay."
