Chapter 153Lily's POV
"Avery," he murmured, his voice like velvet. "I don't know what it is, but I can promise you this, I'll never let you break alone. Whatever it is, let me share it with you."
The sun had almost sunk behind the line of trees, staining the river with gold. The light should have soothed me, but my chest was tight, my thoughts snarled. My mother's face, tired, broken and imprisoned, flashed before me over and over, like a wound reopening every time I blinked.
I turned toward Devante, sitting beside me on the grassy bank. He had that usual half-smile tugging his lips, the one that said he thought the world bent for him, the one that infuriated me.
"Do you really want to know?". I asked, looking at him straight in the eye.
"Yea I do, that's why I asked in the first place".
"Ok then".
"Go on, I'm listening".
