Chapter 139Sonia's POV
The kitchen smelled faintly of roasted meat and spices, but even that wasn't enough to mask the bitter taste in my mouth. I stirred the pot with more force than necessary, splattering oil against the walls. Jane had demanded a special meal,not that she'd ever thank me for it. She never thanked anyone.
Truth was, I wasn't even cooking because I cared. I was cooking because I needed an excuse.
An excuse to stay away from him and an excuse to keep my mind busy and not think about him.

For days now, I'd managed to dodge him, slipping out of rooms before he arrived, leaving chores half-finished if I sensed his presence, even pretending to be asleep when he came looking for updates. It's pathetic, I know. That's what is happening right now. It's still a surprise to me, Sonia,the same girl who never hesitated to slice people apart with my tongue, suddenly playing coward.
