"Pack it up," Devante ordered the attendant.
I froze. "What?"
The words landed like stones in my chest.
The attendant bowed quickly and began gathering the gowns, silks, and sparkling jewels laid out before us, treasures worth more than my entire life combined. My stomach plummeted.
"Your high.." I stopped myself. "Devante…You really don't need to get these things for me. I am fine"
He turned, smirking, his confidence shining brighter than any jewel in this shop. "Did you really think I'd let you walk out of here empty-handed? No, Avery, that is not gentlemanly and I am a gentleman . These are yours now."
My hands trembled. "I… I can't accept this. My husband…"
His grin shifted, playfulness sharpening into something darker. He stepped closer until his scent, spice, smoke, and something richer, wrapped around me. His voice lowered, smooth as silk, dangerous as fire and then he whispered with a slight smile on his face.
