The silence in the Moby Dick's map room was a weapon. For a full ten seconds after Ace's declaration, no one moved. No one breathed. The commanders, the legendary former Admiral, and the ghost of God Valley all stared at their new captain as if he had just sprouted a second head.
Silver D. Morgan was the first to break the silence. "A game?" he growled, his voice a low, rumbling earthquake of pure, unadulterated fury. "We are being hunted by the one of the most powerful army, and you want to play games with that old hag?"
"We can't fight Big Mom and Akainu at the same time, yoi!" Marco burst out, his usual calm completely gone. "This is insane, Ace!"
"She might laugh in our faces," Ace admitted, his predatory grin never faltering. "But I don't think she will." He looked around at his confused family. "You're all thinking like soldiers. You need to think like her. What does Big Mom want more than anything? She wants a complete collection. She wants a party. And she wants to be entertained."
He leaned forward. "A war for Fish-Man Island would be long, bloody, and boring. But a Davy Back Fight? A public, humiliating spectacle where she has the chance to steal the son of Roger himself? That's not a war. That's a new, exotic sweet for her collection. It's the most interesting party invitation in the world."
Kuzan let out a slow, deep chuckle. "Ara ra... he's right. The old woman is a creature of impulse, not strategy. This is exactly the kind of beautiful disaster she would agree to."
"Big News" Headquarters...
"He did WHAT?!" Morgans shrieked in journalistic ecstasy. "He challenged Big Mom to a Davy Back Fight?! Stop the presses! This is one of the greatest story of the century!"
The news hit the world like a tsunami. Blackbeard laughed, believing his rivals would cripple each other. Shanks just smiled. "That brat... he's playing game now."
Aboard the Fleet Admiral's Flagship, Dogma, in the New World...
Fleet Admiral Sakazuki stood on the bridge, a silent, smoldering volcano of a man, watching his crusade fleet cut a merciless path through the sea. A subordinate approached, trembling slightly, holding a newspaper.
"Fleet Admiral, sir. News from the Burning Crown Pirates..."
Akainu snatched the paper. He read the headline about the Davy Back Fight, a low growl rumbling in his chest. "Fools. They mock the world with their games while the 'D.' curse festers." He was about to toss the paper into the sea when a special, golden Den Den Mushi on the command console began to ring. The direct line to the Five Elders.
The entire bridge crew froze. Akainu answered it, his expression grim. A cold, authoritative voice, devoid of emotion, spoke from the other end.
"Sakazuki."
"Yes, sir."
"We have been made aware of your... crusade," the Elder stated. "It is to be halted. Immediately."
Akainu's knuckles went white. "But the D. curse! The son of Roger! They are a direct threat to the—"
"Your primary duty is to the World Government, Fleet Admiral," the Elder cut him off, his voice like chipping ice. "Not to your personal theology. Two of your three Admiral seats are vacant. Your headquarters is a ruin. The balance of the New World is in chaos. Your tantrum ends now."
A second voice, just as cold, spoke. "Rebuild Marineford. Appoint new Admirals. Restore the world's faith in our absolute power. Do not waste our military might on a wild goose chase while our own house is in shambles. Turn this fleet around. Is that understood?"
Akainu stood in silence, his magma body bubbling with a rage he could not unleash. He was a force of nature, but even he was on a leash. "...Understood," he finally bit out, the word tasting like ash.
The line went dead. He looked out at his magnificent fleet, at the absolute power at his command, and gave the most humiliating order of his life. "Change course," he growled to the helmsman. "Set a course... for New Marineford."
He looked back at the map, his eyes burning with the fire of a zealot whose holy war had just been postponed. Play your games, pirates, he thought. Get strong. When the Marines are whole again, I will come for all of you. And there will be no mercy.
Whole Cake Island...
"Maaama-mamama! A Davy Back Fight?!" Charlotte Linlin roared with laughter. Against the frantic advice of her children, she saw the perfect opportunity. "This isn't a war. It's a tea party. And the main dish just offered to serve himself on a silver platter!"
She pointed a massive finger at a Den Den Mushi. "Get me the Roger's brat on the line. I'm accepting his invitation."
Back on the Moby Dick, the Transponder Snail rang. Ace answered, putting it on speaker. The massive, booming voice of a Yonko filled the room.
"Gol D. Ace! Maaaama-mamama! I accept your challenge!"
A wave of dread and excitement washed over the commanders.
"But we'll do this on my terms!" Big Mom continued. "We will meet at a neutral site: the island of Elbaf, the land of giants! A fitting stage for a legendary game, don't you think?"
Ace's blood ran cold for a fraction of a second. Elbaf. Memories supplied the context: the one place in the world Big Mom had a history of pure, unadulterated hatred for. This was a trap within a game.
"And for the first round," Big Mom's voice boomed, and this was the twist that changed everything, "We won't be playing some childish boat race. The first game will be a cooking competition! A battle of desserts! My finest chef against a champion of your choosing!"
A cooking competition. The entire room was stunned into a comical silence.
"If you win," Big Mom cackled, "you get to choose one of my children to join your crew—including the Sweet Commanders, of course! But if I win... I don't want one of your commanders. I don't want your one leg Admiral."
Her voice dropped to a low, hungry growl.
"I want the girl. The one they call the 'Big Eater'. I hear her power is quite... unique. She will make a fine addition to my collection."
