With the Six Eyes, unparalleled thought processing, and my sheer ability to archive the most random thoughts, you would think that I'd never get headaches.
Like actual headache.
But no, I guess having kids nerfs people like that.
All of this was because there, right in front of me, was an honest to god portal. I shouldn't have been surprised I guess. I myself liked to skirt the laws of physics by teleporting wherever I wanted.
So when my three kids that had all inherited Limitless, with the help of Hikari who also had the Six Eyes, managed to open a stable portal. I should have been more proud than anything else.
Yet there I was, the early signs of a migraine making my sinuses throb. It wasn't because they had opened a portal, no. This was because of where the portal led to.
I could see it, on the shimmering surface of the portal. A very familiar camp. A whole bunch of teenagers and kids in orange shirts. Most of those kids practiced swinging swords and spears. Some shot arrows at static targets.
"Papa… Ai swears it was an accident." Ai said as she tugged on my sleeve.
I sighed, turning to my fifteen year old daughter. "Ai, it's fine. Also, you know I'd still think you're adorable even if you didn't refer to yourself in the third person right?"
She blushed lightly, "Sorry… I just thought you'd be really mad. So I decided to try and be extra cute."
I chuckled, turning to Hikari, Himari, and Akira. "Why would I be mad? This is actually hilarious, think of all the chaos I, no… we could cause."
Himari raised her hand, "Tousan?"
"Hai! Himari-chan" I pointed to her, "what's your question?"
"Why are you making that face then?" She tilted her head.
"Yeah, you only made that face when you get annoyed Otousan." Hikari added.
"Ai-neechan, Hikari-nee, and Himari-nee are right dad. You look like you're ready to send a Hollow Purple at someone." Akina nodded sagely.
I shrugged, "I'm just annoyed because I can feel someone trying to look at us through the portals surface. Three certain old ladies that think they can dabble with everyone's lives."
"Tch… let me at them Tousan." Himari frowned.
"Himari-nee, let's not get ahead of ourselves." Hikari put a hand on her shoulder.
"Yeah! Dad always says that you need to scout something out before jumping into things…" Akira began.
"Yeah but he also says to just jump in as long as you can make a cool entrance." Ai added with a shrug.
"Right then kids, leave this to me. Go fetch your mom. And Ai, go grab my sword. I'll be back after I scout out the spot this opens to, I have a feeling we'll be having a whole new adventure soon."
The kids' smiles turned chelshire. I nodded at them and adjusted my sunglasses. Putting my hands in my pockets I took a deep breath before stepping towards the portal.
Releasing it slowly, I muttered.
"Once more into the breach."
Then I stepped through.
[Scene Break]
The world blinked.
My leather shoes touched down on grassy earth. I looked around, I was on a hill overlooking the camp. The shimmering barrier was just a few hundred feet in front of me. No one spotted me yet, I took it all in.
The air, the distant sound of horns. It was all nostalgic… at least in the sense of missing something that was my old reality, my old life.
The smell of smog, the skyline that wouldn't change for decades. I wasn't going to lie and say it didn't have me tearing up a little.
"Oh… modern life… I've missed you."
I closed my eyes, focusing on an imageI had in my head. Years ago when I had just been a shithead teenager, before the whole waking up in another reality thing, I had taken a trip to New York with my school.
I had snuck off on my own to be alone for a bit, as one does, and had found myself on a rooftop before I was unfortunately dragged away by security and sent back to my school group.
The building had been rather old, and from what I remembered, it was in the belly of the city. I pulsed my cursed energy and let Blue carry me across space time.
I reappeared on a rooftop with a light crack. I glanced around and grinned.
'It worked… thank fuck for that.'
The rooftop looked cleaner, less graffiti than when I visited. The stores below me were all different too. Less Starbucks and more pizza joints with greasy menus and sketchy electronic shops.
I looked down at what I was wearing, my normal white button up shirt, fitted black trousers, black leather shoes, simple leather belt with a silver buckle. I had left my haori at home.
'Close enough… at least I wasn't wearing a full traditional yukata. That would have made me stand out a little too much.'
My white hair was already bound to draw attention to myself. My sunglasses could be written off as a fashion choice.
I looked around until I spotted a decent looking spot and teleported again. This time ending up in an alley next to an electronics store. I stepped out onto the sidewalk and as naturally as possible, stepped into the store.
A young clerk, maybe eighteen or twenty years old looked up at me and froze before stammering a greeting.
"Uh… hi! Welcome to Futuretech, sir. Can I… uh, help you?"
I smiled warmly at her, she had black dyed hair and piercings, very early 2000s. I observed as her eyes flicked over to my hair, then my expensive looking clothes.
I heard someone whispering to their friend from behind a shelf of computer parts. "Is he a model?" Then another murmur. "Nah… must be some European tourist."
I smiled tilting my head, "What does your catalogue of smartphones look like?"
My voice was smooth, deep, and definitely not European sounding.
The poor girl blinked, "A smartphone?"
"Yeah," I nodded solemnly, "preferable one that can connect to the internet, and has a decent camera."
She nodded slowly, "Uh, right… we just got a few BlackBerry Curves in… or the Motorola Q, if you want something fancy like Wallstreet douchebag fancy, we have a few Nokia N95s in stock."
I squinted behind my sunglasses, "Do any of them explode?"
She looked confused, I continued. "What about inter-dimensional travel… any of them come with shielding for that?"
She blinked owlishly, "Uh… sir, I just work here."
"Right, never mind then." I waved her off, "just give me the coolest looking one."
Five minutes later I was examining my new N95, the goth girl behind the counter seemed to hesitate as she read out the price to me.
"That'll be… $749.99, sir."
I hummed, I didn't have dollars on me, but I did have a hilarious amount of gold that I just so happened to 'find' after I had helped end the First World War.
I pretended to dig around my pocket for a few seconds before dropping a finger sized lump of solid gold on the counter.
"Keep the change." I called back to her as I stepped back out onto the street before ducking away into an alley.
I teleported back to where I started, the portal was still in the same spot. Though now Mitsuri and the kids had come through. I hummed as I gave Mitsuri a quick peck on the lips.
"Tousan… where did you go?" Himari asked me.
I whipped out my new phone from my pocket, my family looked at it strangely.
"Satoru, what is that?" Mitsuri asked me.
"It's a handheld cellphone."
"Cell phone?"
"It's like a radio but it can contact someone from across the world."
Mitsuri and Akira looked confused, I had to remind myself that back in our homeworld, the first cellphone hadn't been invented yet and communication technology was advancing very slowly due to my interference in the wars.
"You got a magic radio?" Akira asked.
"It's a phone dummy." Ai corrected him.
"Whatever, what are we gonna do now Tousan?" Himari interrupted the fight between Ai and Akira before it happened.
"No clue yet, do you kids want to attend summer camp?"
Mitsuri and I stood side by side as our children quietly discussed it amongst themselves. Occasionally one of the twins would look up from the huddle circle my kids had made and glance my way.
Eventually they came to an agreement.
"Otousan… we would like to attend this summer camp."
"Where is the summer camp?" Akira asked.
"Speaking of… where are we Darling?" Mitsuri looked around.
"We're in America right now." I replied.
The kids looked awed, "America?" Himari asked.
"Wow." Ai hummed.
"It looks kinda like Okinawa." Akira mumbled.
"So the summer camp is in America?" Hikari asked.
"Yup, it's a special camp for special children." I smiled.
"Otousan… is this a camp for autistic children? If so then only Akira-niisan needs to be here." Hikari shook her head.
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?" Akira pointed at her.
I chuckled, "Let's go check out the camp… Ai, hand me my sword."
Ai held my sword out to me, I reached out to grab it. The second my hand touched the saya I felt a sudden sensation of electricity running up my arm.
I tensed.
"Dear?" Mitsuri reached out and held my arm.
"Heh, it's fine… just got really dizzy for a seco—
Just as my eyes closed I heard my kids shouting for me.
"Otousan! Dad! Tousan! Papa!"
