When Mai Shiranui saw that the card Emiya had drawn was Geese, her eyes flickered briefly.
She didn't say anything.
It was as if Geese wasn't the man who had killed Andy's father.
Of course, Emiya didn't think this meant Mai Shiranui had let go of Andy.
If she could let go, she wouldn't have chased him for over a decade, remaining unwavering the entire time.
This woman was clearly the type who, once she fell in love, would never let go.
Put nicely, it was persistence.
Put bluntly, it was stubbornness.
Emiya could only feel helpless about it.
He had already revealed the future.
If Mai Shiranui still refused to let go, there was nothing he could do.
So he set aside those thoughts and joined the evening feast.
That night, everyone stayed up late.
The welcome party didn't end until very late, and only then did they return to their rooms and fall into deep sleep.
...
The next morning, after Emiya and the others got up, they split up to look for their respective opponents.
The Ryozanpaku team flew straight to South Korea to find Kim Kaphwan.
The Loki team went to look for the Ikari Warriors.
The Ikari Warriors were a world-famous mercenary group, so finding them wasn't difficult.
As for Emiya's Heroic Spirit team-
They flew directly to South Town.
Their target was Geese.
This time, besides Emiya, Cú Chulainn, Heracles, and Illya, Mai Shiranui also came along.
As she put it, "King is in South Town. Of course I'm going there. Otherwise, how am I supposed to gather my team?"
Emiya didn't doubt that at all.
In previous KOF tournaments, King had always been her teammate.
And King lived in South Town.
So going there made perfect sense.
The group boarded a plane and arrived in South Town.
Erina Nakiri and Hisako Arato, on the other hand, were sent back by Emiya to the Kikuriku Tower.
After getting off the plane, Emiya and the others didn't immediately go looking for Geese.
Instead, they followed Mai Shiranui to a bar called Illusion.
The owner of the bar was Mai Shiranui's longtime teammate.
King.
King warmly welcomed Mai Shiranui and was equally enthusiastic toward Emiya and the others.
"Welcome, Mai! And welcome to your friends!"
She stepped forward and hugged Mai Shiranui.
Mai smiled. "Long time no see, King. You look great. Did something good happen?"
She paused, then teased, "Could it be Sakazaki...?"
"Shut up."
As soon as King heard Ryo Sakazaki's name, she shot Mai a glare.
"Instead of talking about me and him, let's talk about you and Andy."
Mai smiled. "Andy and I are doing great."
Emiya rolled his eyes.
Purely saving face.
King grinned. "Did you tell Andy you were coming to South Town?"
"How about we all get together tonight? Bring your friends too."
Mai's smile stiffened.
Just for a moment.
"How about... we don't?"
That fleeting stiffness didn't escape King.
The smile on her face faded immediately.
"Mai, did something happen between you and Andy?"
Mai shook her head. "No."
"Really?"
"Really. There's nothing going on."
"Do you think I'll believe that?"
King's expression turned serious.
"Could it be Andy-"
She knew her friend too well.
If something was wrong, it was rarely Mai's fault.
"No, no," Mai said quickly. "The problem isn't Andy. It's me."
"You...?"
King stared at her.
"Mai, did you fall in love with someone else?"
As she spoke, her gaze unconsciously swept over Cú Chulainn and Heracles.
Cú Chulainn was a demigod, with an appearance far beyond Andy Bogard.
As for Heracles-
After regaining his sanity, he was calm and imposing, his physique like a sculpture carved by a god.
No human fighter could compare.
Honestly, Heracles could crush almost anyone.
So if Mai Shiranui had fallen for one of them, it wouldn't be strange.
Emiya, however, was never considered.
"Nothing like that," Mai said firmly.
"I've never fallen in love with anyone else. The only one I've ever loved is Andy."
King finally let out a breath.
If Mai had really fallen for someone else, she would've given her blessing.
But she truly didn't want to see Mai and Andy's relationship fall apart.
She had always supported them.
"Then what's wrong?"
"Oh, don't ask about that."
Mai quickly changed the subject and took an invitation from her pocket.
"King, this is actually why I came. How about we team up again and enter this tournament?"
When King saw the invitation, a trace of gloom flashed across her face.
Mai noticed it immediately.
A bad feeling rose in her chest.
"Mai..."
King hesitated, then spoke.
"I probably can't join you in this KOF tournament."
Mai froze. "Did something happen?"
"My brother was in a car accident," King said.
"I need to stay by his side and take care of him."
As she spoke, her gaze wavered.
She didn't even dare look at Mai's expression.
Emiya clicked his tongue quietly.
King's brother really had terrible luck.
If Emiya remembered correctly, he had once been seriously ill, barely able to move.
The surgery had been extremely expensive.
That was why King came to South Town in the first place.
South Town was full of fighting competitions.
Prize money.
A chance.
After arriving, she clashed with a group of hooligans and beat them up.
They couldn't defeat her, so they kidnapped her brother.
In a sense, her brother suffered because of her.
With her brother taken hostage, King had no choice but to join them.
Later, that group fell under the control of Mr. Big.
Mr. Big wasn't an ordinary gangster.
He was one of the executives of South Town's largest crime syndicate and a longtime rival of Geese Howard.
King ended up switching sides and managing a bar for him.
Throughout that period, she lived as a man.
Mr. Big eventually provoked Takuma Sakazaki and kidnapped Yuri Sakazaki.
That led Ryo Sakazaki to King's bar.
They fought.
After losing, King's true identity was revealed.
She had never been loyal to Mr. Big, so she told Ryo and Robert Garcia where Yuri was.
Moved by her sincerity, Ryo promised to defeat Mr. Big and encouraged her to change her path.
King was moved.
She helped them.
Mr. Big was defeated.
Later, Ryo used his prize money to pay for her brother's surgery.
King recovered her brother.
And eventually, with Robert's help, she opened Illusion.
That was the bar they were standing in now.
But fate wasn't kind.
After finally recovering, her brother got into a car accident two years later.
No matter how you looked at it, he was unlucky.
From Emiya's perspective, though-
This was normal.
King was a heroine.
And the family members of heroines were high-risk existences.
Especially in major heroine plots.
If no one in the family suffered, it would almost feel incomplete.
Honestly, it was lucky King wasn't a "main" heroine.
Otherwise, her brother might not have survived at all.
The fact that he was still alive was already a miracle.
"Where is your brother?"
Emiya spoke after seeing Mai Shiranui's disappointed expression.
"Maybe I can help."
King froze.
Mai turned to him in shock.
"You can help?"
Emiya replied calmly, "I have healing abilities. As long as he's not dead, I can usually save him."
"A car accident is nothing."
King's eyes widened.
As a fighter, she knew very well that superpowers existed.
Athena Asamiya was proof enough.
Hope ignited instantly.
