"Power Ring technology?" Bruce glanced at Hal's hand. He'd already noticed that every one of Hal's attacks originated from that ring.
"Like the one he's wearing?"
"Exactly," Morin nodded.
"The Green Lantern Corps is a massive organization operating across the universe. This technology belongs exclusively to them. They use willpower-that green energy. And since the source of fear energy is also sealed in their territory, they have both the tech and the resources."
"So it's sealed there?" Bruce frowned.
"Are they afraid of it?"
"Put that way," Morin said, "you're not wrong."
"Then why would they ever agree to make a ring for me?" Bruce asked.
"Well..." Morin paused briefly.
"I did beat all of them up not too long ago. If they don't agree, I'll just do it again."
Bruce: "..."
Suddenly, the Yellow Ring didn't sound nearly as reassuring.
Even if he obtained it, Bruce doubted it would close the gap between himself and Morin. And if it really made someone that powerful, why was Morin so casual about handing it over?
Still, power was power.
Bruce decided to get the ring first and deal with everything else later.
As for the Green Lanterns possibly getting beaten again-
He figured they'd survived once. A second time would build character.
In Bruce's view, Morin was irritating, mischievous, and often unbearable-but his values were solid. If the Corps was getting thrashed, they probably deserved it.
...
"I see," Abin Sur said gravely.
"Recently, our scanners detected Parallax changing course. Based on what you've told me, he likely sensed the fear energy here... along with my former ring's energy."
"He probably believes I'm dead. Since you're the new bearer, he intends to destroy Earth first. His hatred for me is absolute."
Abin Sur quickly pieced it together. Anyone imprisoned for billions of years would want to erase everything connected to their captor.
"I'll mobilize the Corps immediately and intercept him before he reaches Earth," Abin Sur continued.
"A battle of that scale too close to the planet would cause catastrophic collateral damage."
He paused.
"As for your friend corrupted by fear energy... use willpower to seal him for now. Whether he can be saved depends on the extent of the corruption. If it has reached his brain and heart..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
"Understood," Hal nodded. He felt no particular grief. Saving Hector was duty, nothing more. If it failed, so be it. Hector had tried to infect him, after all.
"Prepare yourselves," Abin Sur said.
"I'm rallying the Corps."
The transmission ended.
"Parallax is coming for Earth," Hal relayed.
"He thinks Abin Sur is dead and wants revenge on my ring. The Corps is intercepting him."
"Good. They won't help much, but they can block the shockwaves," Morin said bluntly.
"Clark. Bruce. We're the real firepower. Don't forget that."
"And before that," Morin added,
"we're going to Oa to get Bruce his Yellow Ring."
"...What?" Hal froze.
"You can make rings out of fear?"
"Why not?" Morin shrugged.
"Fear is just an emotion. Power Rings are tools designed to channel emotional energy. Fear isn't evil by default. With control, it's usable."
"...That actually makes sense," Hal admitted.
When the big players spoke, Hal listened. Arguing was pointless.
Also because he couldn't beat any of them.
Another thought crossed his mind.
If a Yellow Ring could be created and mastered... could it drain the fear from Hector?
"I need to seal you," Hal said, standing before the restrained Hector.
"It might be the only way to fix this. I'm sorry... but it's for your own good."
Without waiting-Hector couldn't respond anyway-Hal activated his Green Ring.
Following Abin Sur's instructions, he encased Hector completely in willpower, forming a total seal.
...
"You're leading them to Parallax?" Sinestro intercepted Abin Sur, frowning.
"Yes," Abin Sur nodded.
"We cannot ignore this. It's our responsibility."
"And you expect me to join a suicide mission?" Sinestro shook his head.
"The Lanterns aren't ready. Parallax is too strong."
"You're afraid," Abin Sur said calmly.
"There's no shame in failure."
"Yes, I am afraid," Sinestro admitted.
"The power gap is obvious. We need time to develop. Until-"
He stopped himself.
Until the Yellow Ring is complete.
But that path required abandoning Earth.
And Abin Sur would never allow that.
"Until what?" Abin Sur pressed.
"...Nothing," Sinestro said.
"Oa must not be left undefended. I'll remain behind."
Abin Sur: "..."
You're complimenting yourself now?
"Very well," Abin Sur said formally and took off to prepare the interception.
Sinestro watched him go, then turned toward the Forbidden Zone.
"Will has limits," he murmured.
"But fear can grow without end."
"Fear is the ultimate emotional energy."
...
Far away, Abin Sur suddenly received another message.
"What?" He frowned.
"You're coming to Oa?"
Morin appeared on the screen, dragging Bruce into view.
"We're here so the Guardians can forge a Yellow Ring. He's a perfect match."
"You shouldn't know about the source of fear," Abin Sur said sharply.
"And you must understand-fear energy is nearly impossible to control. Everyone who's touched it has fallen. Even the Guardians."
"Parallax itself was born from a corrupted Guardian."
He needed Morin to understand the danger. If Morin forced the issue, disaster would follow.
"I know," Morin replied calmly.
"And I don't act unless I'm sure."
"He can control it."
Abin Sur studied Bruce silently.
...He does look like a walking trauma archive.
"The Guardians won't agree," Abin Sur said at last.
"That's fine," Morin waved it off.
"I'll ask them myself."
"We're almost there."
Abin Sur ended the call stiffly, delaying the Corps and rushing to the Great Hall.
"Guardians!" he arrived to find only one remaining.
"Where are the others?"
"Occupied," the Guardian replied.
"And you should be mobilizing the Corps."
Abin Sur quickly explained Morin's arrival and demand.
"How do they know?" the Guardian was shaken.
"I don't know," Abin Sur denied immediately.
After a pause, the Guardian spoke again.
"If they want a Yellow Ring... if someone can truly master it, it isn't impossible."
"But do we even have one?" Abin Sur asked.
"Is there time?"
"You asked where the others went," the Guardian said, looking toward the Forbidden Zone.
"We began forging one earlier."
"It should be nearly complete."
"...What?" Abin Sur was stunned.
"Why wasn't I informed?"
"It was Sinestro's proposal," the Guardian said evenly.
"If your plan failed, we needed a countermeasure."
"And Morin is an outsider. We cannot rely on him alone."
Abin Sur fell silent.
There was nothing he could say.
Morin's voice echoed in his mind.
"Perfect timing. No waiting."
"We'll meet you at the Forbidden Zone."
"...You heard all that?" Abin Sur sighed.
"Then let's go."
...
The Forbidden Zone.
A vast sea of yellow energy churned violently, restrained by invisible forces. A thin stream was siphoned into a ring within a machine.
Then-
Light exploded.
The Guardians watched, pupils contracting.
They had sworn never to use fear.
Today, they broke that vow.
The first Yellow Power Ring was complete.
Sinestro was ecstatic.
Fear will be mine.
He reached out.
"Stop."
The Guardian blocked him.
"Remove your Green Ring," the Guardian said.
"Will and fear cannot coexist."
Sinestro hesitated-then removed it.
The Green Ring went dark.
"...Very well."
Sinestro reached again.
"Stop."
Another voice.
"It wasn't us," the Guardians said.
"It was me."
Morin descended with the others.
"Sorry," he said calmly.
"But I believe this ring has a more worthy master."
Translation-
This ring isn't for you.
