Chapter 279 - Chapter 17: Choosing Sides

Everything came down to interest.

For beings as old as the Guardians, profit and loss were the only things that mattered.

After witnessing Morin's strength, they understood one thing clearly-they couldn't afford to make him an enemy. Turning him into an ally was the optimal outcome.

Abin Sur was the bridge.

"I never planned to be their enemy," Morin explained calmly to Diana. "They're a 'good' organization. This is just a transaction."

Meanwhile, in space.

"Not enough! Again!" Morin's voice rang through the Lantern network. "Don't worry about hurting me. Show me the 'Greatest Corps in the Universe'!"

The Lanterns were furious.

Even knowing he wasn't trying to kill them, their pride couldn't take it. The intensity of the battle climbed sharply.

Finally, a construct blade scraped Morin's arm, leaving a thin red line.

Cheers erupted.

If he could bleed, he could be beaten.

"Tsk." Morin glanced at the scratch.

It healed in microseconds.

Hope surged through the Lanterns-only for Morin to extinguish it.

"Not bad," he said evenly. "You forced me to use twenty percent of my power."

A complex magic circle unfolded on his left hand. Electromagnetic force crackled violently around his right.

His voice echoed in every mind.

"Now... want to see what else I can do?"

The Lanterns froze.

The pressure multiplied instantly.

Every instinct screamed at them to flee.

"Enough!" Abin Sur flew between them. "That's enough! We're allies. No need to go further!"

"Fair," Morin replied.

He withdrew his power.

"Let's head back down."

The point had been made. Pushing further would only shatter morale.

"As I said," Morin smiled modestly once they returned to the platform, "I'm just a regular human."

The Lanterns and Guardians stared at him in silence.

Regular. Right.

"My second objective is my gym," Morin continued. "I need students. You all look like you could use the training. That said, Parallax takes priority. When the time comes, I'll help."

Meanwhile, back on Earth.

At a harbor in Coast City, fishermen were unloading an enormous catch.

They were ecstatic.

A 469-kilogram bluefin tuna.

And it was glowing faintly yellow.

A mutant.

"Is Hector's birthday tomorrow?" Senator Hammond asked, seated in his luxurious office.

"Yes, sir."

"Get him a gift," Hammond said with a tired sigh, picturing his balding, resentful son. "You know what kind."

The secretary headed out-but traffic stalled him near the harbor.

He noticed the crowd.

The glowing tuna.

A rare biological specimen.

Perfect.

He bought it on the spot.

Ding-dong.

Hector Hammond opened the door.

His receding hairline made him look far older than he was.

"A gift from your father," the delivery man said. "A rare mutant bluefin tuna."

Hector's eyes lit up.

"Bring it in."

The fish was transferred into a large tank. Once the delivery crew left, Hector got to work immediately.

"A yellow glow..." he muttered. "Pigment mutation? Or something else?"

He sedated the three-meter-long fish and drew a blood sample.

"...Yellow blood?"

Frowning, he placed it under a microscope.

"Ah!"

Hector jerked back.

A sharp shock-like static electricity.

"Interesting..."

He leaned in again.

"The yellow substance is infiltrating red blood cells... behaving like a microorganism I've never seen."

His breathing quickened.

"If this is a new discovery..."

His career would be made.

He injected the sample into a lab rat.

And waited.

On Oa.

"That's the training plan for each Lantern," Morin said, handing the data to Abin Sur. "Diana and I are heading back. I won't risk fear energy lingering on Earth."

"Agreed," Abin Sur said solemnly. "Thank you."

"What about me?" Hal Jordan asked.

"Stay here and learn the basics," Morin replied. "Once you're ready, you can return."

He paused.

"Or you can come with me and learn the real way."

"I'm coming with you," Hal said immediately.

He knew exactly where the real strength was.

The three boarded the ship.

Moments later, it shot toward Earth.
